The Good Neighbor

A man’s lifeless body, weighed down by an anchor, slowly sinks into the depths of a water body. From this haunting opening, the story transitions to David (Luke Kleintank), an American journalist starting a new chapter in Latvia. After arriving at the airport, he quickly connects with his superior and friend Grant (Bruce Davison), who assists him in settling down by providing accommodations and critical arrangements, including the keys to a car parked nearby.

As David visits his new workplace, he begins to familiarize himself with his coworkers and the environment. That evening, however, when he attempts to start the car, he faces disappointment as it stubbornly refuses to ignite. Seeking assistance, he approaches his neighbor Robert (Jonathan Rhys Meyers), who generously offers to share fuel to jump-start the vehicle. When this plan fizzles, Robert kindly offers to dive into his garage for repairs, ultimately managing to get the car running. This moment leaves David mistakenly thinking Robert is a mechanic, but Robert humbly denies the assumption.

With the car functioning, David invites Robert to accompany him for a drive. They engage in lighthearted conversation, gradually forming a budding friendship. Lacking familiarity in this new locale, David invites Grant to dinner, only to discover that Grant already has plans. Consequently, David asks Robert to join him for drinks instead, leading them to a nearby pub where David encounters Janine (Ieva Florence). Captivated by her, he strikes up a conversation where Janine shares a bit about herself, including her love for cycling. After a playful dance, Janine leaves her number scrawled on David’s arm, which leaves him excitedly eager for more.

However, a dark turn awaits as David and Robert leave the pub that night. While driving through a moonless night, the pair smokes and attempts to adjust the car’s music, inadvertently causing David’s attention to stray from the road. In a startling moment, he hits someone—a cyclist—and the shock sends adrenaline coursing through him. To his horror, the woman sprawled on the ground is none other than Janine. Conflicted and panicked, David grapples with the moral dilemma of reporting the accident. Urging him not to, Robert insinuates that the consequences, especially for David having been intoxicated, would be detrimental, possibly leading to a murder charge.

While trying to soothe David’s frantic state of mind, Robert subtly absolves him by claiming that the dark conditions contributed to the tragedy. The next day, David confronts Robert about their decision to flee from the scene. Robert cleverly reasons that both their futures would be at stake if they went to the police. As David navigates his guilt, he encounters the haunting image of Janine’s body being whisked away by an ambulance—an experience that weighs heavily on his conscience.

At a press conference for Janine’s death, David meets her sister Vanessa (Eloise Smyth), who has traveled from England seeking answers. A chance encounter with the beleaguered journalist soon blossoms into a shared emotional journey as they seek the truth together, although David is horrified by his own secrets weighing down their relationship.

As David and Robert’s friendship begins to unravel under the strain of their shared secret, tensions rise. Robert grows increasingly jealous of David’s bond with Vanessa, culminating in moments of violence fueled by suspicion. When David and Vanessa decide to go kayaking, Robert’s presence turns menacing, revealing the depths of his obsession.

The narrative takes a astonishing turn when the police arrive at David’s home, investigating a potential call he never made. As suspicion mounts, Vanessa confronts David, leading to Robert’s violent actions directly targeting her. In a desperate ploy to protect his own interests, Robert foils David’s attempt to communicate with Vanessa, resulting in a chilling confrontation between the friends that teeters on the edge of chaos.

As the dark plot unfolds, the truth about each character’s motives and actions slowly sifts to the surface.
