Garfield, voiced by Chris Pratt, is a lazy, overindulgent orange tabby cat who enjoys a life of luxury alongside his beagle friend, Odie, played by Harvey Guillen, and their caring owner, Jon Arbuckle, portrayed by Nicholas Hoult. A true connoisseur of food, Garfield’s appetite is insatiable, and he frequently uses Jon’s phone to indulge in various food orders.
Garfield’s early memories are laced with trauma, the most vivid being when he was abandoned by his father in a dark, stormy alley. In a twist of fate, the scent of freshly baked pizza led him to a restaurant where Jon was dining alone and yearning for companionship. Spotting little Garfield through the window, Jon opened it, inviting him in and sharing a slice of pizza. Garfield, overwhelmed with joy, began to feast from every table in the restaurant. When Jon mentioned the no-pet policy in his apartment, Garfield’s tears moved him, and he took Garfield home. From that moment on, Garfield was never alone again.
As time passed, Jon relocated to a quaint house in the suburbs, adopting Odie to keep Garfield company. This led to a unique dynamic where Garfield often trained Jon on being the perfect pet owner. However, Garfield’s life is not void of anxieties; he dreads Mondays and loathes his trips to the vet. Often, he tends to Jon, putting him to bed with a comfy eye mask and noise-canceling headphones after a long day.
The plot thickens when Garfield and Odie are abducted by a duo of dogs, Roland, voiced by Brett Goldstein, and Nolan, played by Bowen Yang, who take them to an abandoned mall. However, their rescue comes unexpectedly from Garfield’s estranged father, Samuel L. Jackson, who has a complicated history with his son. Garfield’s feelings are mixed; he has long held resentment for his father’s abandonment.
The story deepens as Jinx, voiced by Hannah Waddingham, a sinister Persian cat with a vendetta against Vic, reveals her plans for revenge. Jinx claims she has been wronged since their failed heist at Lactose Farms. Desperate for vengeance, she demands that Vic, along with Garfield and Odie, break into the farm to steal an exorbitant amount of milk—1675 quarts to be precise—as recompense for her suffering. Though hesitant, Garfield is coerced into participating, fearing for his and Odie’s safety.
Meanwhile, Jon, realizing his beloved pets are missing, struggles to rally support to find them. We see the tension and dynamics between Garfield and Vic surface when they embark on their journey to Lactose Farms. Vic attempts to teach Garfield some real-world survival skills, but Garfield remains reluctant, feeling abandoned even in this new venture.
Upon reaching the farm, they meet Otto, voiced by Ving Rhames, the farm’s former mascot who, with promises of helping them break in, reveals intricate details about the farm’s security systems. Otto trains the team in preparation for the heist, but tension runs high between Vic and Garfield. An emotional revelation occurs when Vic shares his side of the story about that fateful night when he left Garfield behind.
As they navigate through the farm’s hazards and face unexpected challenges, they come to a critical juncture where their loyalty and courage are truly tested, leading to dramatic twists involving Jinx, betrayal, and the importance of family ties. Just when things seem dire, Garfield learns the depth of Vic’s love for him, despite their troubled past.
The intense climax unfolds as Garfield and Vic, cornered by Jinx and her gang, must rely on each other and their newfound understanding to escape. With moments of peril and courage, they confront Jinx in a thrilling showdown that leads to a heartfelt resolution in which bonds are strengthened, and families are reunited.
As the story draws to a close, Garfield returns to his normal life, now with a deeper understanding of family and the realization that sometimes love means letting go. The final moments allow for reconciliation between father and son, with Vic becoming a fixture in Garfield’s life, signifying a new chapter filled with promise and understanding.
