Garfield is introduced as a cat who loves a good laugh, and he starts the tale by reading a book about the origins of Freddy Frog, his pond, and the very beginning of humor, sharing it with Odie. At breakfast, Jon Arbuckle reminds Garfield that Arlene wants to dance with him at the upcoming Annual Fun Fest, but Garfield is set in his 29-year comedy routine and bets on another win, convinced he will prevail once more as the 30th Annual Fun Fest looms tomorrow night.
Arlene finds a different dance partner, Ramone, leaving Garfield heartbroken as he heads out alone. He tries a fresh act that he performs solo, but it falls flat amid Ramone’s taunts, deflating his ego. To make matters more awkward, Arlene and Ramone appear to be smitten with each other.
In the studio cafeteria, Odie hands Garfield a letter that reveals a map leading to Freddy Frog’s pond. Garfield hatches a plan to travel there and drink the water in hopes that it will make him funnier, and more importantly, impress Arlene. Arlene watches him depart, realizing she has hurt Garfield, and she rushes after him, only to find that Garfield and Odie have already vanished on their quest. The two companions push forward, facing a series of obstacles and meeting a host of funny animals who have already drunk from the pond.
At last, they encounter an enormous frog—Freddy—who makes it clear that this isn’t the pond they seek and guides them through a sequence of trials designed to teach what true humor is. Garfield struggles to grasp the lessons of the tests, while the journey itself begins to shift his perspective. Throughout these challenges, he is reminded that humor can be found in self-reflection and genuine heart, not just in a lucky routine.
Meanwhile, back at the festival, Fun Fest’s director worries about Garfield’s disappearance, and [Ramone] takes the stage in his place. In the forest, Garfield reaches a pivotal moment: he drinks from the pond and starts to feel a new kind of laughter bubbling up inside him. He also drinks from a bottle of pond water and, with Freddy’s help, gets a hang glider to soar above the trees, thanking the community of animals who aided him on the journey. They land near the Fun Fest just as Garfield’s turn arrives.
A crucial twist nearly costs Garfield the moment he has waited for: the bottle containing his “funny water” is destroyed in the crash, and the contents spill away. Feeling as if his humor might be lost forever, Garfield leaves the stage with a heavy heart, watching from behind the curtain as Arlene and Ramone dance together. Arlene makes an effort to approach him, but Ramone pulls her back into the performance.
Freddy then reveals the timeless truth: the “funny water” was never what made Garfield funny; the humor came from Garfield’s own growth, courage, and choices made along the adventure. Freddy urges Garfield to trust his heart and seize the chance to prove himself in front of the audience. With renewed hope, Garfield returns to the stage.
Onstage, Arlene meets Garfield for a dance, while Ramone tries to upstage them, leading to a confrontation. In the ensuing moment, Garfield’s quick thinking exposes Ramone as a robot, and he yanks away Ramone’s disguise, revealing the mechanical impostor as Nermal inside a suit. The crowd reacts with mixed cheers and boisterous boos, disqualifying Nermal as the judge’s decision stands in Garfield’s favor.
Garfield and Arlene share a victorious encore, and Garfield apologizes for not trying to dance earlier, recognizing that the moment was about connection, not merely winning. The crowd celebrates as Garfield and Arlene receive a perfect score—the first of its kind in Fun Fest history. The celebration crowns Garfield and Arlene as the winners, while Nermal contemplates next year’s ideas, much to Odie’s amused dismay. Freddy brings the tale to a close by flying off on the hang glider back to the pond, leaving the friends with a new understanding of what makes them funny.
