Unable to find a suitable apartment in Seattle, Washington, journalist Nick Elliot decides to venture into the suburbs. There, he comes across a sign advertising a guest house available for rent, owned by the frequently traveling couple, Liv and Cliff Forrester. Without much hesitation, Nick accepts the property and begins to renovate it. However, his presence quickly captures the attention of the Forresters' 14-year-old daughter, Darian, who begins to exhibit a keen interest in him.
