On October 30, known as Devil's Night, Sergeant Albrecht investigates a grim scene in Detroit. Shelly Webster has been viciously beaten and raped, while her fiancé Eric Draven is found brutally murdered and thrown from their apartment window.

Shelly and Eric were eagerly anticipating their wedding planned for Halloween, symbolizing their love and commitment. The foreboding atmosphere surrounding their planned celebration only amplifies the tragedy of their fate.

Amidst the chaos, Albrecht encounters a young skateboarder named Sarah. He unfortunately has to break the devastating news to her about Shelly's grim condition, highlighting the deep connections among the victims.

A year later, a crow arrives at Eric's gravestone and pecks it, awakening him from his eternal slumber. Confused but driven by rage, Eric steps into his former life, haunted by the memories of that fateful night.

Upon rising, Eric discovers his wounds miraculously heal, fueling his desire for vengeance. He transforms his appearance, painting his face in memory of the porcelain harlequin mask he had gifted to Shelly, signifying his rebirth and mission.

Eric targets Tin Tin, a henchman of the gang responsible for Shelly's death. In a brutal and methodical fight, he uses dark humor to taunt Tin Tin while striking him down with his own knives in a gruesome tribute to the alphabet.

Eric tracks down Gideon, the pawnshop owner, to reclaim Shelly's engagement ring. Instead of killing Gideon, he ominously instructs him to deliver a death message to the remaining gang members before causing an explosion in the pawn shop.

Moving on to Funboy, Eric confronts him in a drug-laden apartment. After being shot, Eric miraculously heals and exacts revenge by administering a fatal dose of morphine, also addressing and helping Darla, Sarah’s mother.

As the crimes escalate, Albrecht reflects on the bizarre nature of the chaos unfolding. During an encounter with Eric, he learns the tragic details of Shelly's last moments, deepening his internal conflict about the ongoing violence.

Gideon informs Top Dollar about Eric's quest for vengeance, leading to a fatal showdown. Violent retribution ensues, demonstrating the deadly consequences of the gang’s actions and their willingness to kill to protect their own.

Eric confronts Top Dollar and his gang in a final explosive battle. Emerging as the last man standing, Eric faces the police as well, solidifying his role as both avenger and tragic hero in the midst of chaos.

As his mission draws to an end, Eric gifts Shelly's engagement ring to Sarah, a poignant reminder of love's persistence. This gesture encapsulates the lasting impact of their relationship, even beyond death.

Top Dollar attacks Eric through the crow, the source of Eric's invulnerability. In a final dramatic encounter, Eric defeats Top Dollar, symbolically inflicting Shelly’s suffering back onto him.

After rescuing Sarah, Eric succumbs to his wounds and is reunited with Shelly's spirit. This ethereal embrace symbolizes the ultimate triumph of love over tragedy and loss.

The film concludes with Sarah visiting Eric's grave, symbolizing love that endures beyond the grave. The crow departs, leaving behind Shelly's ring, signifying that true love transcends life and death.
