In What’s After the Movie, the story spans over a century, beginning in 1854 with Puang, a soldier who becomes entangled with a malevolent ghost known as the Black Spirit. During a battle, Puang is wounded, and shortly thereafter, he encounters the ghost dressed in black, who offers to spare his life in exchange for him serving as her host. Puang, desperate to survive, agrees, and the ghost demonstrates her power by removing her own tongue and shoving it into his mouth. From that moment, the ghost—referred to as Puang’s ghoul—exerts control over Puang, causing him to commit numerous murders and terrorize many for over a hundred years. Puang manages to hide from her and believes himself safe, protected by an amulet he wears on his arm.
Fast forward to 1975, three years after Puang’s ghoul was responsible for the death of Yam, a young woman. Here, we meet Yak, a dedicated hunter of supernatural entities, who has forsaken a normal life to seek justice and revenge against the ghoul for his sister’s death. With him is his loyal friend, Sarge, who survived a gunshot wound from the previous film. Their quest takes them deep into Dong Khomot, a dense and dangerous forest inhabited by numerous supernatural beings, each more malevolent than the last.
In their perilous journey, they are joined by Luechai, a man haunted by the loss of his family to the ghoul; his nephews, Jirasak and Nawin; Sem, a necromancer with roots in Laplae; and Khom, a local porter from Northern Thailand. As they venture further into the forest, they encounter various dark spirits and hostile creatures, including a king cobra that kills Sem and a werecat that devours Nawin in a horrifying transformation. Tensions rise and chaos ensues—Jirasak, overwhelmed with fear, fires at the ghosts, killing Khom and then tragically shooting himself after a hallucination. Meanwhile, Nawin is separated from the group and attacked by the werecat, which takes on Nawin’s form to lure the remaining survivors into danger.
Despite the relentless attacks, only Yak, Sarge, and Luechai manage to survive and seek refuge in a sacred salt lick. The following day, they arrive at a dilapidated hut near a swamp, where they encounter the still-living Puang, who reveals her tragic story. Puang has become immortal, cursed by her pact with the ghost, and she has been hiding from her tormentor using an ancient amulet. As Luechai cuts off Puang’s arm to retrieve her amulet, the ghoul appears in full fury. It kills Luechai and Puang, taking back her tongue, and confronts the remaining trio with malevolent intent.
In the chaos, Yak tries to battle the ghoul, but she forces him to shoot himself, seemingly ending his life. Meanwhile, in a different setting, Yak’s family is preparing at a hotel for Yad and Pradit’s wedding. The ghoul infiltrates the hotel, using her supernatural powers to cause confusion and induce sleep among the guests. She possesses Boonyen, Yad’s mother, forcing her to hunt down Yee with a pickaxe, but Yee manages to escape her possessed mother and the ghostly presence of Chauy’s ghost.
Yad, meanwhile, experiences a haunting vision of Yam before she is attacked by the ghoul. As the supernatural chaos unfolds, Yak and Sarge arrive just in time to confront the ghoul once more. Using a protective yantra drawn on a voodoo doll—a protection Puang left behind—Yak, now wearing Puang’s amulet, becomes invisible to her, allowing him to fight and dodge her attacks. The ghoul captures Yad, threatening her life unless Yak reveals himself by removing the amulet. He complies temporarily but works to save her amidst the chaos.
In a pivotal moment, Yad, empowered by Puang’s amulet, pulls out the ghoul’s tongue, which enables Yak to finally cut it off. Sarge then destroys the tongue, rendering the ghoul powerless. With her primary source of control gone, they manage to weaken her, and Yak hammers her forehead with a ritual talisman, a takrut, ultimately vanquishing her. The spirits of her victims are freed from her control, bringing peace to the fallen souls.
In the aftermath, the family reunites, and Yak, gazing at the smiling ghost of Yam, finds some closure, knowing that the darkness has been lifted. What’s After the Movie offers a haunting tale of vengeance, supernatural battles, and the blurring boundaries between life and death, emphasizing themes of redemption, sacrifice, and the enduring fight against evil entities.
