The Cimarron Kid

Bill Doolin is released from jail and heads home on a passenger train. The Dalton Gang stages a bold hold-up on the same train, and Bill is quickly suspected of having helped them. The accusation propels him into a life on the run, hunted by the law.

Doolin arrives at the Dalton gang's hideout where they press him to join their outlaw venture. They reveal a plan to rob two Coffeyville banks at the same time. He agrees to take part in the heist.

Doolin accompanies one bank while Bob Dalton enters the other. A town warning triggers the start of a violent exchange as shots ring out. Most of the six gang members are killed, leaving Bill and Bitter Creek to retreat to their hideout.

With the raid a disaster, a manhunt is launched for the remaining gang members. Lawmen tighten the net and the fugitives must stay one step ahead. The pressure raises the stakes for the survivors.

The gang reunites at Pat Roberts' house to regroup. Red Buck pushes to return to Coffeyville for another robbery, but Bill refuses and the others side with him. The group decides on a cautious course rather than a reckless return to crime.

Swanson and Marshall Sutton arrive at Roberts’ house and search the barn, forcing the hiding gang to rethink their plans. After they leave, Bill contemplates leaving with Carrie Roberts. Carrie warns him that taking the dark road toward Boonsville could mean death.

The gang keeps robbing banks while Rose gathers information in Boonsville and passes it to Bitter. Carrie arrives and greets Bill, and two agents shadow them. Pat Roberts protects them, helping them mislead the law.

Pursued by the law, the gang hides at Stacey's home but is surrounded by lawmen. They escape through the trains’ entrance, but Bill is shot and must recover. Carrie and Stacey arrive, and Carrie urges Bill to cross the border, but he refuses.

Dynamite, who survived, returns with news of a valuable gold shipment. He brings George Weber to the hideout to verify the score, and Rose is sent to Dallas to check George’s story. They confirm George has railroad connections and can facilitate the theft.

Bill and Dynamite board the train bearing the gold. Bitter Creek lunges for the loot but is killed by law enforcement on board. The attempted grab ends in tragedy as the gang loses another member.

Rose's telegram arrives at the next stop confirming Bitter Creek’s death, revealing that Dynamite and George betrayed them. Dynamite shoots George, aiming for Bill, but Bill wounds Dynamite and forces him to pick up the gold. Dynamite is killed and Bill makes his escape.

Bill returns to ask Carrie to cross the border with him, but Pat objects, insisting Carrie will not be safe. They go to the barn where a marshal waits and arrests him. Bill realizes Pat and Carrie betrayed him, while Pat urges him to serve his time and Carrie vows to be there.

Rose notes that Bill is alive, suggesting the story continues beyond the capture. The film closes with a sense of unresolved fate for the outlaw and his relationship with Carrie.
