Martino requests a new posting because he is demoralized by the famine and disease ravaging Athens in 1942. When the assignment to escort prostitutes comes through, he accepts it without enthusiasm, viewing it as preferable to remaining in the capital. The mission represents his desperate attempt to find purpose away from the suffering around him, though he struggles to see how transporting women contributes to the war effort.

Elenitza is mortally wounded during the ambush and is dying. When Alessi announces he will go for help, Castagnoli realizes he intends to abandon the wounded and escape. In the chaos and rage of the moment, Alessi shoots Elenitza dead in a brutal public act, either to end her suffering, eliminate a burden, or demonstrate his ruthlessness to control the remaining group.

After the ambush, Alessi declares he will go fetch help. Castagnoli, wounded and perceptive, recognizes this as a cowardly escape, Alessi intends to abandon the wounded survivors rather than risk remaining with them. Castagnoli stops him at gunpoint to ensure he does not abandon them, forcing Alessi to stay with the group.

Eftikia has consistently refused to sleep with Italian soldiers throughout the journey, viewing the entire arrangement as degrading. However, she makes one final exception for Martino, possibly out of genuine connection or compassion for his disillusionment. After witnessing the brutality of the war, including Alessi's execution of Elenitza and the Blackshirt atrocities, she can no longer bear her role. She walks into the mountains to join the partisans, choosing resistance over survival through exploitation.

The group encounters the burned remains of a Blackshirt lorry and a dead prostitute killed by Partisans. Alessi swears revenge. Moments later, their own lorry is ambushed, likely by Partisans, and catches fire. The survivors scramble to rescue the wounded and abandon the vehicle. This ambush marks the turning point where the mission collapses and the group fractures.

After witnessing the massacre of Blackshirts and a prostitute by Partisans, Alessi erupts in fury and swears vengeance. When the survivors reach a village being burned by Blackshirts, Alessi joins them and participates in executing captured alleged partisans. His desire for revenge against Partisans leads him to align with the brutal Blackshirt unit, abandoning his original role.

The Italian military assigns twelve prostitutes to be transported in a lorry to serve at various military brothels across Albania. This was a common practice, providing sexual services to soldiers. Martino and Castagnoli are tasked with delivering them safely to different postings, an assignment they view as far from honorable combat duty.

By the end, Martino has witnessed the execution of Elenitza, Alessi's transformation into a brutal collaborator, and Eftikia's departure to join the partisans. He successfully delivers Castagnoli to a military hospital where Ebe cares for him, and rescues the remaining prostitutes. However, the journey has shown him the dehumanization of war and the futility of his mission, leaving him without purpose or direction.

During the night at the railway carriages, the pragmatic Castagnoli pairs with the older, more worldly Ebe. After the ambush and subsequent journey, when Castagnoli is severely wounded, Martino brings him to a military hospital. Ebe, who has formed a connection with Castagnoli, provides his care there, showing loyalty and compassion despite the circumstances.

The survivors stagger over the mountains and reach a village being emptied and burned by Blackshirts. Alessi has now joined the Blackshirt unit. Together, they capture alleged partisans and execute them, blurring the line between soldiers and oppressors. This scene reveals the brutal cycle of violence and the moral collapse enabled by war.
