Suburban resident Ray Peterson (played by Tom Hanks) is amidst a week-long vacation, savoring some much-needed relaxation. However, his tranquility shatters as he starts to notice strange happenings around the enigmatic Klopek residence, which has unexpectedly become a fixture in the neighborhood. As night falls, Ray’s discomfort escalates, as he perceives a lurking malevolence behind the reclusive neighbors’ seemingly ordinary exterior.

As the days unfold, Ray’s initial unease morphs into outright suspicion. Along with his friends, Art Weingartner (portrayed by Bruce Dern) and Vietnam War veteran Mark Rumsfield (played by …), Ray begins to weave a disturbing narrative from their observations. They note strange patterns in the Klopeks’ behavior, including an obsessive care for their garbage cans and strange late-night activities involving digging in their garden.

One crucial evening, Ray’s wife Carol (played by Carrie Fisher) takes charge and organizes a friendly welcome visit to the Klopeks. Meanwhile, Ray is left to stew in mounting anxiety, convinced something sinister is taking place next door. The Klopeks, who kindly agreed to collect his mail, have inadvertently included his toupee among the accumulated letters—an embarrassing oversight that foreshadows deeper troubles awaiting Walter.

As Ray seeks to clarify the mix-up, he suddenly changes his mind, declaring that he and his friends were wrong in their judgment of the Klopeks. With newfound resolve, he boards an ambulance, determined to make amends. Yet, as tension mounts, Werner bursts onto the scene, terrifyingly accusing Ray of having made a grisly discovery—a human skull found within the bowels of the basement furnace. It quickly becomes evident that the Klopeks’ motives hinge on a desire to claim the Weingartners’ property, silencing its former residents through gruesome means.

As Werner seeks revenge on Ray, Hans (played by …) skillfully maneuvers the ambulance into a crash with the Weingartners’ house, sending both men sprawling onto the pavement. This chaotic moment provides Ray the opportunity to apprehend Werner, making a citizen’s arrest just as authorities arrive.

Meanwhile, Ricky (portrayed by …) stumbles upon a horrifying secret—a trunk filled with human skeletal remains hidden in the Klopeks’ vehicle. The repercussions are immediate and severe: the Klopeks are taken into custody, and Ray’s charges are swiftly dropped.
