Tom Heath is a withdrawn teenager living in South London who longs to be a rock musician. He retreats into fantasies of fame and keeps his passion hidden from his mother, Mary. The daily bullying at school makes his dream feel distant and fragile.

Mary disapproves of music because she blames her estranged husband's failed career on their son's ambitions. Tom keeps his guitar hidden at home, while Damien and others torment him at school. The tension between his dream and his family life drives Tom further into his inner world.

Tom's father Chris abandons the family, leaving Tom devastated and more isolated. The abandonment strengthens Mary’s stern stance, alienating Tom from open conversations about music. Tom's sense of loss lingers as he clings to the hope of someday proving himself.

A new tenant moves into the council flat, and Tom discovers Max Stone—a former American rock guitarist living in hiding. Max blasts loud music day and night, which unsettles Tom but also fuels his curiosity about the music he might learn. Tom begs for lessons, hoping Max can unlock the dream he keeps secret.

Max Stone is revealed to be a former American guitarist who vanished years earlier after his young son drowned and he fled tax fraud charges. He is presumed dead by the world, living in hiding and keeping his guitar playing to himself. The hints of his past begin to surface as Tom's curiosity grows.

Tom pressures Max to take him on as a student; Max initially refuses. Tom threatens to reveal Max's survival to the authorities, forcing his hand. Reluctantly, Max agrees to give Tom lessons, setting the stage for an uneasy mentorship.

Under Max's guidance, Tom's skills begin to sharpen and his confidence grows. The uneasy mentorship slowly deepens as Max shows glimpses of warmth. Mary, initially suspicious, starts to warm to Max and even shares meals with him.

Mary confronts Max about teaching Tom without explanation, feeling betrayed and fearful for Tom's safety. She lashes out, accusing Max of being unfit to guide a child, and the tension peaks between them. Shaken by guilt over his own son's death, Max leaves a letter for Tom and withdraws from their life.

Tom's depression returns and he relapses into self-harm as the dream of stardom feels distant again. The strain of relationships and hidden ambitions weighs heavily on him. He clings to music as the sliver of hope left in his life.

Felix, a girl from Damien's band, sees a video of Tom playing with Max and invites him to contribute as a songwriter. Tom is inspired by the chance to connect his music to others and agrees to collaborate. The collaboration marks a new direction for his artistry.

Damien steals Tom's work and threatens to expose Max's survival to the authorities, pressing Tom to give up. Feeling hopeless, Tom contemplates suicide on the roof of his building, but Max appears and urges him to channel his pain into music instead.

Tom enters the local battle of the bands and struggles with stage fright at first. With Felix's support, he finds his courage and Max unexpectedly reappears on stage to perform the duet with him; the crowd roars and the performance goes viral.

The viral video leads to crowdfunding of around £500,000, giving Tom wider recognition. Police arrive soon after and arrest Max for tax fraud; he accepts the sentence and asks Tom to keep going.

Max is released from prison and Tom, now a confident musician, reunites with him and they perform together, fulfilling Tom's dream of becoming a rock star.
