The Lyricist Wannabe

Law Wing Sze and her friend Chick attempt to perform a rewritten version of the 'Infernal Affairs' theme song at their school's talent show. Their performance is abruptly canceled when the event gets overrun by other activities. This event marks their initial effort to showcase their musical talent and creativity.

Sze and Chick meet Mak, a classmate who shares their passion for music and criticizes the school's restrictions. Inspired, Sze enters a lyric writing competition hosted by CASH, seeking to push beyond the school's limitations. Despite their efforts, they do not advance past the longlist.

Chick informs Sze that her mother is sending her abroad to Britain, leaving Sze disheartened. Nevertheless, Sze decides to continue pursuing her dream by reaching out to music composers, hoping for opportunities outside her school environment. Only one composer, Wong Hiu Tung, responds to her emails.

After finishing her A-Levels, Sze attends a summer lyric writing course taught by Lo, who introduces her to the '0243' Cantonese lyric writing method. Empowered, she begins seeking out other songwriters, leading to a collaboration with aspiring singer-songwriter Chris Lee. Meanwhile, she starts university and begins dating Zeke.

During her university days, Sze reconnects with Mak, who reveals his true identity as Wong Hiu Tung and recognizes her lyric-writing talent. She then gains an opportunity to meet Taiwanese record producers thanks to Chris, although her relationship with Zeke begins to strain amid her career pursuits.

While traveling with her university friends, Sze learns of her breakup with Zeke, who criticizes her for prioritizing her career over their group. She channels her feelings into writing new lyrics, fueling her passion to succeed as a lyricist. This emotional drive leads her to participate in a major lyric writing competition.

Sze participates in a joint lyric writing competition organized by Hong Kong record labels and wins the gold prize. She is rewarded with a contract as a professional lyricist. However, her joy is short-lived when she hears her lyrics on the radio, altered and attributed to a Taiwanese artist, highlighting issues of authenticity in her career.

Sze’s first professional assignment is to write lyrics for singer Helencandy's debut album. When her demo is criticized on the basis of her raw talent, she tries to prove herself by offering to write lyrics for free. Her efforts are met with rejection, leading to her being fired by Wong, who questions her suitability for a lyricist's career.

Feeling discouraged, Sze looks for alternative employment and applies to Hong Kong Free-riders, a ridesharing company. She is hired by Kan, the company founder, who asks about her dreams and values her desire to be a lyricist. Unfortunately, the company's operations are shut down shortly after due to legal issues, leaving Kan devastated.

Sze takes a working holiday in Taiwan, hoping to gain perspective and inspiration. During her stay, she overhears the demo song she co-wrote with Mak playing on the radio in a convenience store. Her emotional reaction reaffirms her identity and commitment as a lyricist, despite the setbacks.

Listening to her co-written song on the radio, Sze is overwhelmed with emotion and reaffirms her passion for lyric writing. Her journey illustrates her resilience and unwavering dedication to her craft, despite facing numerous professional and personal challenges.
