In Lahainaluna High School on the island of Maui, two groups of seniors—native Hawaiian students and Filipino immigrants from Ilocos—are drawn into a tense dispute when Zack Dan Francis Rodriguez is confronted by Kona Kaleo Pinto over fishing for the endangered ʻOʻopu. Their conflict spills into class, where two boys are paired by their social studies teacher, Ms. Thomas Justine Albert, to research and prepare a traditional dish for a final project.

Edmar Jayron Munoz, the Filipino student, hesitantly encourages Pili Kaipo Dudoit, the native Hawaiian, to team up so they can pass the assignment together. After some initial friction rooted in different cultural perspectives, Pili invites Edmar into his world, bringing him to meet his family and teaching him about Hawaiian life, including their deep respect for the land and for conservation. Through hands-on experiences like loʻi kalo farming, making a lei, taking part in a lively lūʻau, and sharing ʻawa from a kanoa, Edmar begins to understand Pili’s roots and the cadence of the island’s traditions.

Pili explains how Hawaii’s ecosystems were harmed by historic plantations—sugarcane and pineapple—and how countless families experienced hardship as a result. Over the weekend, Edmar’s feelings grow stronger, expressed through small gestures and the sense that he wants to be closer to Pili.

As their bond deepens, Pili builds a warmer connection with Edmar’s friends, Zack and Cedric Bryant de Venecia, and the trio bonds over a FIFA video game, sharing laughs and a sense of camaraderie.
