Max Stone is a former American rock guitarist who vanished years earlier after his young son drowned and he fled tax fraud charges. Presumed dead by many, he lives in hiding, blasting music at all hours. Initially hostile to Tom's request for lessons, he is softened when Tom blackmails him with his identity. Over time, Max's mentorship helps Tom grow creatively and emotionally, even as Max contends with guilt and danger.

Tom's mother Mary is protective and practical; she disapproves of music due to her husband's failed career. She gradually befriends Max after initially feeling betrayed by his teaching. Her decisions and conversations reflect her struggle to keep the family together.

Damien is Tom's rival at school and the leader of a band; he bullies Tom and threatens to reveal Max's survival. His actions reveal a toxic mix of arrogance and insecurity. He complicates Tom's path to fame, forcing him to prove himself on his own terms.

Chris is Tom's father who shows little interest in his son and eventually abandons the family. His absence contributes to Tom's sense of abandonment and self-worth issues.

Felix is a girl from Damien's band who admires Tom's talent and invites him to contribute as a songwriter. Her encouragement helps Tom during the battle of the bands. She and Tom begin a romantic relationship after the viral video and recognition.
