The Apparition

On May 21, 1973, six people conduct The Charles Experiment by staring at a drawing of a deceased man, Charles Reamer, hoping to summon his spirit. They perform a parapsychological ritual designed to contact the other side. The setup foreshadows dangerous consequences that will echo into the present.

Years after the original experiment, four college students—Patrick, Lydia, Ben, and Greg—attempt to recreate the Charles Experiment on a larger scale using modern technology. They set up a new session, hoping for stronger insights or results. The plan signals a direct continuation of the earlier work with new tools.

During the experiment, something attacks the participants and pulls Lydia into the wall, and she vanishes from sight. The others are left shaken and unsure what has happened. The event marks the first direct consequence of attempting to contact the spirit.

Sometime later, Ben and his girlfriend Kelly start living together. They notice strange disturbances in their home and respond by taking precautions. The tension from the prior incident hints at a lingering threat beyond their understanding.

Ben and Kelly discover unusual mold and spores around the house, including the laundry room and a crawlspace. The growths feel like a creeping menace and suggest an unseen force at work. The couple starts to realize their home is becoming a site of something malevolent.

Ben receives 36 urgent emails from Patrick, first about another attempt at the Charles Experiment, then warning that containment has failed and that Ben is in danger. The messages heighten the sense that someone is monitoring the situation. The emails propel the characters toward a dangerous confrontation.

After witnessing an apparition, the couple travels to a hotel for safety, but they are attacked there as well. They flee the hotel in a frantic effort to escape. A crucial phone call with Patrick then sets up the next stage of their danger.

Patrick explains that the initial experiment allowed a malevolent entity to enter their world, and that he has built a room surrounded by a negative current to protect himself from it. He urges them to continue with containment efforts to keep the entity at bay. The explanation reframes the threat as something both external and controllable.

The trio returns to Ben and Kelly's house to attempt a new containment experiment, hoping to seal the entity away. They set up devices and the house becomes a testing ground for their plan. The stakes are raised as the danger closes in.

During the containment attempt, the house begins to shake and crack as the entity presses in. The tremors abruptly stop, and Patrick is pulled into darkness and vanishes. Ben and Kelly are left to cope with the sudden loss and increased peril.

Inside the house, Patrick's personal log is played back, revealing information about the original six: two died, one committed suicide, and the other three disappeared. The history of the experiment is laid bare, underscoring the high cost of meddling with the unknown. The narration ties together past and present threats.

Following Patrick's log, Ben disappears inside the safety chamber while Kelly searches for safety. The chamber becomes a fragile sanctuary as the entity closes in. The loss underscores the hopelessness of their situation.

Kelly exits the chamber to find Ben's contorted corpse, confirming that the entity feeds on victims. The protection they sought proves deadly rather than safe. The house grows quieter as danger intensifies.

Patrick's narration explains that the entity gets stronger with every victim it takes and will wear its prey down until they are too weak to resist. The warning recasts the events as an escalating trap rather than isolated incidents. The sense of inevitability deepens as the story moves toward its end.

With no escape, Kelly wanders through an empty Costco and heads toward the camping section, entering a tent as the entity closes in. A series of hands appear from behind, and the entity slowly grabs hold of her as the screen cuts to black. The end leaves her fate ambiguous and chilling.
