The Accursed (2022) Plot Summary & Ending Explained

The conclusion of "The Accursed" reveals that Dorothy, who appears to survive the fire at the Ambrose estate, is not truly gone. The film leaves her fate open, implying that she has been possessed by the dark entity that was once inside Ms. Ambrose, Helen, and that it has now taken refuge in her. What started as Helen's curse and Dorothy's desire to save her mother ultimately results in her becoming the new vessel for evil. The final scene, in which Dorothy is shown singing the same song her mother used to sing, suggests that the dark force is still very much alive and active, lingering inside her. It hints that the evil has been passed on rather than defeated, and Dorothy's survival and recent arrival at the hospital indicate that the cycle of horror continues. The film’s unresolved ending encourages viewers to imagine whether evil has truly been vanquished or if it will return in a new form through Dorothy. Overall, the ending emphasizes the persistent presence of darkness and the idea that some evils are never fully eradicated, simply waiting for their next opportunity to emerge.
