Her son Herman attempts to erase her ancestry from records to protect the family, while other characters face persecution and moral compromises under the oppressive regime.

Francis Alt is the head of the Alt piano manufacturing firm and Henrietta’s husband. After his affair with Baron Traun leads to a deadly confrontation, he is left paralyzed and mute following World War I, remaining a controlling figure who seeks reconciliation with Henrietta as the world collapses around him.

The story is defined by relentless tragedy: Henrietta’s forced marriage to a man she doesn’t love, Baron Traun’s suicide after their affair ends, Francis’s paralysis and muteness, Herman’s desperate alignment with Nazis, and Henrietta’s own suicide to escape Gestapo arrest. Baron Hugo Traun is a trusted confidant within the aristocratic circle who becomes romantically involved with Henrietta. His affair with her creates a love triangle that exposes ambition and jealousy. He is ultimately killed by Francis Alt in a duel, a pivotal event that shapes the story’s tragic trajectory.

Henrietta’s children face diverging fates. Paul Alt assumes command of the factory during wartime and represents continuity for the family. Monica Alt chooses to leave Vienna for America with her boyfriend Gino to escape deteriorating conditions. Herman Alt becomes involved in illegal arms trading and later aligns with the Nazi regime in desperation.
