In 1933, celebrated actress Maria Rheine falls in love with her Jewish colleague Mark Löwenthal. When the Nazis enact the Nuremberg Laws, their relationship is jeopardized. Defiantly, Maria abandons her thriving career, assumes a Jewish identity as Manja Löwenthal, and joins Mark onstage at Berlin’s Jewish Theatre. Their partnership draws the jealous envy of colleague Judith, who betrays them by reporting them to the secret police, sealing their tragic fate.
