Ruth (Kalki Koechlin) is a British woman who journeys to India driven by a deep need to find her father, a man she barely knew yet couldn’t forget. The only clue she has is a letter from him, expressing a desire to reconnect, but it arrived with no return address. Ruth’s father, Arjun Patel, holds a British passport and is believed to be in India, setting her off on a quest that takes her across multiple Indian cities.

Without a work permit, Ruth finds herself desperate and eventually takes up work at a local massage parlor, where she provides hand jobs for Rs 1000 each amidst a backdrop of Mumbai’s chaotic and often harsh underbelly. Her day-to-day existence involves bribing police officers, an external affairs officer named Mushtaq Khan, and other corrupt figures eager to take their cut of her earnings. These struggles paint a vivid picture of the city, which feels both alien and strangely familiar as Ruth searches for her independence in a place that constantly tests her resilience.

Among Ruth’s regular clients is Naseeruddin Shah, who plays Diwakar, a man who shows genuine care for her and refuses to demand sexual favors, making him somewhat of a beacon of kindness amid her tumultuous environment. Ruth’s hunt for her father takes her from Pondicherry to Goa and Pune, following faint clues and fragmentary leads. Another of her clients is Lynn (Kumud Mishra), who regularly visits for the same service and shares conversations that hint at a complex relationship.

The story reveals Ruth’s entanglement with other characters — including Maya, the madam of the massage parlor, and Prashant (Prashant Prakash), a drug addict who courts Ruth solely for sex. Ruth pushes Prashant away, sensing his shallowness, but their relationship becomes more complicated as he owes money to a dangerous drug lord, Chittiappa (Gulshan Devaiah). Chittiappa, known for his violent temper, arrives at Ruth’s apartment, demanding repayment of Rs 123,000 after Prashant defaults. Ruth tries to negotiate with him, even feigning a traumatic past of her own to manipulate him into leaving her alone.

Despite her efforts to stay safe, Ruth encounters threatening situations that expose the brutal realities of her world. After Prashant flees owing money, Chittiappa visits Ruth and demands a sexual favor while revealing his violent drug dealings. Ruth cleverly uses her knowledge of his troubled past, derived from her own pain, to evoke empathy—prompting him to cry and ultimately leave her be.

Throughout her journey, Ruth confides in Prashant her desire for unconditional love, which motivates her relentless search for her father. She learns that her father was involved in a religious cult and had adopted an alias, Benjamin Patel, while living in India. A cult member named Divya (Divya Jagdal) informs her that Benjamin had his pass canceled by the cult and was asked to leave their ashram. She mentions that she was with him when he wrote her the letter, and Ruth follows clues that lead her to a flat in Versova, Mumbai, where she believes he might be.

Ruth also bribes a British consulate officer, Peter (Shiv Kumar Subramaniam), to get a list of individuals matching her father’s description. She discovers that a photographer named Benjamin Patel is registered with the consulate, but the truth is far more shocking. Ruth finds that her father has been living under the alias Benjamin in the same apartment, and her suspicions are confirmed when she notices her recent photographs scattered around the place, indicating she’s been closely followed.

The climax unfolds when Ruth’s regular client, Lynn, unexpectedly reveals an astounding truth: he is actually her father. Lynn, who knows she is his daughter from the very beginning, confesses his love for her but also reveals a history of betrayal and complex emotions. He admits he married her mother out of love for Emily, Ruth’s stepsister, and that his actions led to devastating consequences—including Emily’s tragic suicide. Lynn’s confession shatters Ruth’s understanding of her own identity, leaving her devastated and confused.

In a heartbreaking conclusion, Ruth decides to leave her life behind in the massage parlor and Mumbai itself. She prepares to go back to Britain, her long quest finally ending with the shocking revelation of her father’s true identity and the tangled web of love, betrayal, and pain that ensnared her.
