Retired thief Roy Egan returns to the game to help his younger brother Lee pull off a jewelry heist in Palm Springs. He joins forces with the hired muscle Jorge Montana and wheelman Skip Kovich. The crew begins planning the operation for the next day.

The heist unfolds the next day in Palm Springs as the team executes the plan. Jorge scrambles police monitors and traffic signals to aid their getaway. The crew escapes with the jewels, setting the rest of the story in motion.

In Skip's motel room, his girlfriend Gena laments how little money Skip will receive from the job. Skip tries to reassure her, but the tension over the payout hangs over their conversation. The moment hints at trouble to come.

At a trailer park, Lee and Jorge toast their haul with beers when Skip suddenly shoots them. Roy, who was in the bathroom, hears the gunfire, slams the door, and runs for it. He steals a car and heads to Los Angeles to lay low and plot his next move.

Roy rents a room in Los Angeles and begins plotting his next moves. He stops by Lee's house to tell Sunny about her husband's death and to ask if she knows Skip's whereabouts. The pursuit of Skip begins to take shape.

Skip enlists Odell and his crew as protection against Roy and confronts his debt to loan shark Harvey. Harvey is connected to the Chinese mob, and Skip agrees to use those connections to track down Roy in exchange for more money. The net tightens around Roy as Skip fights to recover what he's owed.

Roy goes to Jorge's home and asks his widow, Rachel, if she knows Skip. He informs her that Skip killed Jorge, prompting anger and disbelief from Rachel.

At his motel, Roy is kidnapped by two Chinese mobsters. He frees himself and kills his captors, turning the tables on his pursuers. The confrontation marks a turning point as Roy becomes a bigger threat to the mob's plans.

The next morning, Rachel finds Roy bruised and bloodied in her yard and cleans him up. He offers $5,000 to stay hidden, but she demands $100,000 in exchange for his survival. She hands him Jorge's address book with contacts including Skip, along with a Saint Christopher medal for protection. Roy seizes Skip's money from Uncle Luke after leaving behind the motel key.

Uncle Luke informs Skip about the motel key Roy left behind, giving Skip a crucial lead. The news escalates the race toward a climactic confrontation.

Chinese mobsters attempt to kill Roy in his motel room, but Roy is waiting for them and defeats them. The attack confirms the mob's resolve to capture him and the stakes rise for everyone involved.

Skip kidnaps Rachel, escalating toward a final showdown. He goes to a trailer where his girlfriend Gena discovers that Odell has sent two men to collect the money Skip owes. They take Gena hostage, and Skip kills the two assailants, deliberately killing Gena in the process.

Roy and the mobsters arrange a meeting at a refinery and a gunfight erupts. Roy arrives and puts down the mobsters before killing Skip with his bare hands. He rescues Rachel and speeds her to a hospital, leaving money in a duffel bag behind.

Rachel and her children bury Jorge and relocate to Port Arthur, Texas. A closing image shows a postman delivering a small package to Rachel: inside is the Saint Christopher medal Roy had given her, proving that he is alive.
