Set against two Greek dictatorships—the Metaxas regime (1936‑1940) and the Colonels’ Junta (1967‑74)—the film portrays the former as a grotesque circus. In Part One, clown Thanasis Vengos hides a young colleague’s subversive act. Part Two follows Thanasis as his honesty and kindness bring suffering, exposing the irrational cruelty of the later regime.
