In 1988, Henk Rogers, portrayed by Taron Egerton, is at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, promoting his latest video game from Bullet-Proof Software. However, his attention shifts when he discovers the game Tetris, developed by Russian coder Alexey Pajitnov who is employed at ELORG in the Soviet Union. Henk learns that Robert Stein, played by Toby Jones from Andromeda Software, has secured the worldwide licensing rights to Tetris from ELORG. This deal was brokered with media magnate Robert Maxwell and his son, CEO Kevin Maxwell, both positioned to proliferate Tetris through game royalties.

At CES, Henk successfully acquires the rights for Tetris in Japan for various platforms. Following this, he journeys to Nintendo’s headquarters in Japan to engage with CEO Hiroshi Yamauchi. Henk skillfully markets Tetris to Yamauchi, ultimately turning down a buyout offer in favor of a collaborative partnership. To facilitate the production of cartridges and arcade machines for Nintendo, Rogers pledges his apartment as collateral for a loan, despite the protests from his wife and business partner Akemi. Henk assures her that their children’s enthusiasm for the game will lead to success.

However, complications arise when Kevin Maxwell informs Henk that the arcade rights have been assigned to Sega. In a bid to refocus, Henk requests his residuals ahead of schedule. He then travels to Nintendo of America in Seattle, where he discovers the impending launch of the Game Boy, originally intended to be released alongside Super Mario Land. Henk persuades president Minoru Arakawa and senior VP Howard Lincoln to bundle Tetris with the Game Boy and secures the handheld licensing rights.

Rogers then faces an uphill battle as he attempts to negotiate with the Maxwells in London, only to discover that Stein is retaining all global licensing rights. In a bold move, Henk lodges an offer of $25,000 for the worldwide handheld rights, which Stein appears to accept. Yet, when Henk later learns that Stein has promised the handheld rights to Atari instead, he resolves to travel to Moscow alongside Kevin to secure those rights directly from ELORG.

Arriving in Moscow, Henk is assisted by a local woman named Sasha, who offers to translate for him, while cautioning him about the illegalities of his mission. A tense conversation with Nikolai Belikov, the president of ELORG, reveals that they only licensed Tetris for PC, accusing Henk of theft. Despite threats from a KGB agent, who confronts Henk about his activities, he remains steadfast.

As events unfold, Henk bonds with Alexey, playing the original Tetris, and they discuss the game’s mechanics. Intrigued by Henk’s vision, Alexey expresses frustration over his lack of royalties from a game he created. Meanwhile, tension builds as Kevin learns about the missing millions from his father’s company, with suspicion growing around their shady business dealings.

In a crucial dinner at Alexey’s apartment, Henk pitches collaborative ideas while their friendship develops. However, dark forces linger as KGB agents begin to threaten and intimidate them, leading to a shocking kiss from Sasha, stirring confusion as Henk remains devoted to his family.

Rogers soon faces dire consequences as he learns that his negotiations may have reached a fatal impasse with the Maxwells. Tensions escalate when former trust crumbles as contracts are signed, leading to mirror moves between Henk and the Maxwells as they all vie for control of Tetris.

Rogers and his team strategize in a desperate attempt to secure the rights before the Maxwells can finalize their own deal. After a dramatic series of confrontations, Henk’s team manages to put together a counteroffer that ultimately outmaneuvers the Maxwells, leading Belikov to choose Henk’s deal, much to the dismay of his previous allies.

Their journey culminates in a tense escape from agents out for vengeance, with Alexey aiding Henk’s flight to safety. Upon returning home, Henk redeems his relationship with his daughter and wife, presenting them with the proof of his endeavors—a lucrative deal from Nintendo that reaffirms his choices.

The story concludes with the overwhelming success of the Game Boy, highlighting the enduring legacy of Tetris, even amid the backdrop of the Soviet Union’s collapse. Henk sends Alexey a Game Boy and tickets to America, leading to their heartfelt reunion, while also unraveling the fate of the Maxwells and the repercussions of their dealings in the realm of video games.
