Across town, Zhou Yufen confronts a deep personal ache—depression born from a miscarriage three years earlier—as she wrestles with turning her surrounding chaos into a novel about a couple facing marital strain. In the hospital where her husband, Li Lizhong, works, the section chief dies, leaving a triad of potential contenders for the vacant role. Li follows a troubling path, manipulating the political and professional landscape before his depiction of the old chief’s misdeeds becomes the smallest part of a much larger drama. He wrongfully implicates Jing for a crime the former chief committed, and Jing, convinced the real culprit is someone else, resigns in indignation.

Meanwhile, Shen, once Zhou’s editor and boss at a newspaper, rehires her and becomes entwined with Zhou as she explains how her fiction draws on her surroundings. Their relationship deepens into an affair when Shen shows genuine interest in her work. Qiang’s personal life unravels as his girlfriend, furious about Shu’s photographs of him displayed in their shared apartment, attempts suicide while he is out documenting strangers. Back at Shu’s apartment, Shu, immobilized by her healing leg, begins dialing prank calls to torment the gang’s hideout and other neighbors, including Li, drawing Zhou into a tense confrontation that ends with Zhou discovering Qiang in the building and exchanging uneasy words with him.

Shu’s absence grows more tangled as Zhou disappears for several days, only to reappear and walk away from Li, who cannot grasp the depth of the pain driving his wife away. Shu, now healed, slips into a club frequented by the gang, where she uses her allure to seduce and rob a man, a move that tightens the circle of danger around her. She returns to the gang’s apartment to find Qiang’s wall collage—a literal mosaic of Shu’s images—that confirms his fixation on her. Qiang confesses that he has become obsessed with Shu and, with a sense of impending conscription, asks her to stay with him when he returns from service. Shu answers by stealing his camera and pawning it, replacing it with a cheaper model before she leaves with Shun. After a period apart, Qiang is drafted and then reconciles with his girlfriend, hinting at a fragile, evolving balance in his life.

Zhou’s literary success reaches an awards ceremony, and Qiang recognizes her photo in the press. Her boyfriend, in a quiet aside, notes that her novel tells a story about a man whose wife discovers he is unfaithful, a plot that mirrors the tension simmering in their own world. This realization prompts Li to contact Zhou, sharing photographs of Shu and Shun in a bid to salvage his marriage and standing. Zhou, torn between love and possibility, pleads with Shu to consider reconciliation with Li, but Shu rebuffs the plea. The professional fallout follows: Li’s chances for promotion slip away as his personal life disrupts his work, and an enigmatic secretary hints that the hospital director was away—only to be revealed later as a moment of missed opportunity.

Late one night, Li drinks with his police chief friend Gu, steals his gun, and hurls himself into a moment of fatal decision. He travels to Shen’s apartment, where he shoots Shen, sparing Zhou in a swirl of bullets and fear. Li then wanders the city streets, drawn toward Shu, who has been collaborating with Shun to seduce and extort men. They retreat to a hotel room as police close in, and Shu, wary of Li’s odd, unsettled behavior, draws a knife. Blood splashes the wall in a tense climax that leaves the immediate fates of the principal players unresolved. Gu awakens to the shocking realization that Li has killed himself, while Zhou wakes alongside Shen and vomits, a moment that casts doubt on what truly happened that night. The ending leaves a murky question: was Shen’s shooting a dream, or did it belong to Gu, or to Zhou’s morning sickness, hinting at an ambiguous pregnancy?
