Police raid the gang's apartment hideout, forcing Shu An and her boyfriend Shun to flee. Shu injures her leg by jumping from a balcony while trying to escape. The raid launches Shu's perilous, entangled path with the rest of the group.

An unemployed photographer, Qiang, takes pictures of Shun's arrest and unexpectedly captures Shu watching the scene. The image marks the start of a fixation that ties their stories together. The photographs become a point of tension in Shu's relationship with others.

Zhou Yufen, haunted by a miscarriage three years earlier, struggles to write a novel about a troubled couple. She insists that her stories derive from her surroundings and people she encounters. Her fragile state sets up a parallel narrative that will intersect later with Shu, Li, and Qiang.

The hospital section chief dies, leaving Li Lizhong, his longtime friend Jing, and a third man in the running for the vacancy. Li accuses Jing of a crime the late chief committed, attempting to clear his own path. Jing quits in indignation, widening the rift between Li and his colleagues.

Shen, Zhou’s old boss at a newspaper, rehires her and shows genuine interest in her work. Their professional relationship quickly turns intimate as they embark on an affair. Zhou’s personal life and career become increasingly intertwined with Shen's influence.

Qiang’s girlfriend, furious about Shu’s photographs displayed in the apartment, attempts suicide while Qiang is out taking more pictures. The act exposes the volatile emotions roiling their circle. The incident deepens the sense of danger surrounding Shu and Qiang.

Shu makes prank calls to the gang’s apartment and other residents, prompting Zhou to answer one call. Shu asks Zhou to meet at the apartment for something to be settled, but Zhou’s suspicion leads her to visit the space and encounter Qiang. The meeting blurs lines between strangers and lovers.

Zhou goes missing for several days and then returns to her apartment, leaving Li because he ignored her pain. The disappearance strains Li and foreshadows the unraveling of multiple relationships. Zhou’s absence accelerates the plot’s emotional volatility.

A healed Shu goes to a club where the gang hangs out and seduces a man, robbing him in the process. This action shows Shu’s willingness to manipulate others for her survival and demonstrates the predatory dynamics at play in the group. Her charm masks a dangerous ruthlessness.

Shu returns to the gang’s apartment to find Qiang has posted a collage of her photos on the wall. He admits he has become obsessed with her and, believing he will be drafted soon, kisses her and asks to be with her when he returns. Shu steals Qiang’s camera, pawns it for cash, and leaves with Shun.

After spending time with his wealthy family, Qiang receives a draft notice and reconciles with his girlfriend. The looming draft adds pressure to his life, but the reconciliation gives him a momentary stability before new conflicts erupt. The personal tension persists as events spiral.

Zhou’s novel wins an award, and Qiang recognizes her picture in the newspaper. The discussion about infidelity surrounding the award fuels Li’s suspicions of an affair, and someone passes Shu and Shun photos to Li, intensifying the situation. The line between art and reality becomes dangerously blurred.

Believing Zhou suspects Li of an affair, Li contacts Zhou and tries to pressure her to take him back. The personal turmoil bleeds into his professional life, and his promotion is put on hold. Zhou resists, widening the rift between them.

Li drinks with his police chief friend Gu, steals Gu’s gun, and kills the hospital director. He then goes to Shen’s apartment and shoots Shen, sparing Zhou. He and Shu converge on a hotel room where Shu attempts to use a knife as the police close in, leaving a bloody scene behind.

Gu wakes to learn that Li has apparently shot himself. Zhou wakes with Shen and Vomits, and the film leaves unresolved whether Shen’s shooting, Li’s actions, or Zhou’s possible pregnancy caused the final events. The ending hints at unresolved fates for the characters.
