What Happens in Teresa: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Teresa (1987) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

In the Italian province of Romagna, Teresa drives a lorry with her older husband, Stallino, who dies on the road. She soon discovers that his death left him owing a staggering 80 million lire to Nabucco, a powerful local entrepreneur who now stays close to her and contemplates marriage. To avoid a fate she doesn’t want, Teresa convinces Nabucco to let her keep working for a set period—until Ferragosto next year—so that she can earn enough to repay the debt, otherwise she would be bound to marry him.

Having no affection for Nabucco, Teresa continues to take whatever jobs she can find and, as co-driver, hires Gino, a cheerful, free-spirited young man who draws her interest. With his lack of money and her need to work, a conventional marriage isn’t an option, and their relationship often grows tense and stormy, even as attraction lingers.

Teresa’s journeys take her far afield: she retrieves a beer shipment from a German brewery, where the owner—a baron—desires to marry her, but Gino intervenes and rescues her from that fate. Later, she returns with a load of fresh fish in Sicily that is hijacked by the mafia and destroyed, an episode she negotiates through another perilous negotiation at the hands of a mafia boss. When the boss falls for her, he offers two million lire as compensation if she agrees to become his mistress. A gunfight erupts, and the boss is killed; Teresa pockets the money and is rescued by Gino.

Across a string of escapades along the road, she and Gino share moments of partnership and conflict, yet the question remains: will she ever truly tie herself to Nabucco, or will the pull of freedom and companionship with Gino win out in the end? As the altar moment approaches, she seems ready to say “I do,” but a sudden horn from her lorry cuts the moment loose. She rushes out to find Gino at the wheel, and the pair drive off toward the sunset, discarding bridal garb piece by piece as they escape together.

Teresa Plot Explained: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about Teresa (1987): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

Why does Teresa agree to work for Nabucco after her husband dies?

After Teresa's husband Stallino dies on the road, she discovers he owed 80 million lire to Nabucco, a powerful local entrepreneur. Rather than being forced into marriage with Nabucco immediately, she negotiates a deal: she can keep working and earning money until Ferragosto the following year to repay the debt. If she succeeds, she avoids marriage entirely; if she fails, she becomes bound to marry him. This gives her a temporary escape from an unwanted fate while she tries to find another way out.

Foreshadowing: Early in the film, the discovery of the debt establishes the central conflict that drives Teresa's journey.

  • nabucco debt
  • stallino death
  • teresa bargain
  • 80 million lire
Q2

Why doesn't Teresa just marry Nabucco to settle the debt?

Teresa has no romantic or personal affection for Nabucco. She views marriage to him as losing her freedom and being trapped in a life she doesn't want. Despite the pressure, she chooses to keep working, taking on difficult jobs like long-haul trucking to earn enough money to repay the debt on her own terms. Her determination to maintain independence is the core motivation driving her to reject the easy settlement of simply marrying him.

Foreshadowing: Teresa's independent nature is evident from the moment she continues driving the lorry alone after her husband's death.

  • freedom
  • independence
  • teresa refuses nabucco
  • escape marriage
Q3

What happens to the mafia boss who tries to make Teresa his mistress?

When Teresa goes to the mafia boss's mansion to negotiate compensation for her hijacked fish shipment, he offers her two million lire if she agrees to become his mistress instead. During the meeting, a gunfight erupts and the boss is killed. Teresa takes the money and is rescued by Gino, who helps her escape the dangerous situation.

Foreshadowing: The earlier hijacking of her Sicilian fish load sets up this dangerous negotiation with the mafia boss.

  • mafia boss killed
  • gunfight
  • teresa escapes
  • two million lire
Q4

Why is Teresa about to marry Nabucco if she wants to be with Gino?

The deal Teresa made with Nabucco requires her to marry him if she cannot repay the 80 million lire by Ferragosto. Despite her feelings for Gino, she finds herself at the altar because she cannot raise enough money in time to settle the debt. She appears ready to go through with it out of obligation, until the lorry horn interrupts the ceremony.

Foreshadowing: The recurring pressure of the debt and the approaching deadline create the tension that leads to this moment.

  • wedding altar
  • teresa says i do
  • debt deadline
  • ferragosto
Q5

How does Teresa escape from the wedding at the last moment?

Just as Teresa is about to say "I do" at the altar, she hears the horn of her lorry outside the church. She rushes out to find Gino at the wheel, having come to rescue her. They drive off together, with Teresa tearing off her bridal garb as they escape. The lorry represents her freedom and independence, making its horn the sound that breaks her out of the forced marriage.

Foreshadowing: The lorry has been Teresa's primary tool for independence throughout the film, making its return symbolic.

  • lorry horn
  • wedding escape
  • gino rescues teresa
  • bride runs away
Q6

How does Teresa avoid marrying the German baron?

When Teresa goes to retrieve a beer shipment from a German brewery, the owner, a baron, attempts to force her into marriage. Gino intervenes and rescues her from the baron's unwanted advances, preventing her from being trapped in another forced marriage situation.

Foreshadowing: This episode reinforces the pattern of men trying to control Teresa's life and her need for escape.

  • german baron
  • brewery
  • marriage proposal
  • teresa rescued
Q7

Why does Gino continue working with Teresa despite their stormy relationship?

Gino and Teresa have a complicated relationship marked by tension and attraction. Though they argue frequently and a conventional marriage isn't financially possible for them, Gino clearly cares for Teresa and believes in her fight for freedom. His consistent presence and eventual rescue at the wedding demonstrate his genuine commitment to her, even when their interactions are turbulent.

Foreshadowing: Throughout their journeys together, moments of partnership hint at the deeper connection beneath their conflicts.

  • gino relationship
  • teresa and gino
  • stormy romance
  • co-driver
Q8

What happens when the mafia hijacks Teresa's fish shipment in Sicily?

Teresa travels to Sicily to collect a load of fresh fish, but the mafia hijacks and destroys the cargo. This setback makes it even harder for her to earn enough money to repay Nabucco by the deadline. She must then face the dangerous task of negotiating compensation directly with the mafia boss, leading to the gunfight at his mansion.

Foreshadowing: The hijacking directly leads to Teresa's dangerous encounter with the mafia boss, which becomes one of the film's most perilous moments.

  • sicily fish hijack
  • mafia cargo
  • destroyed shipment
  • teresa trucking
Q9

What would have happened to Teresa if she had married Nabucco?

If Teresa had failed to repay the 80 million lire by Ferragosto, she would have been legally and financially bound to marry Nabucco as part of their agreement. The marriage would have settled her husband's debt, but it would have trapped her in a relationship with a man she didn't love, essentially exchanging her freedom for financial security.

Foreshadowing: The bargain explicitly states that marriage is the alternative to repayment, making this the stakes throughout the film.

  • forced marriage
  • fate if fails
  • bargain consequences
  • teresa obligation
