Tenebrae

Peter Neal, portrayed by Anthony Franciosa, is a celebrated American author known for his graphic horror novels that have garnered immense popularity across Europe. While in Italy to publicize his latest work titled Tenebrae, he is accompanied by his literary agent, John Saxon, and his devoted assistant, Daria Nicolodi. Unbeknownst to him, his ex-wife Jane, played by Veronica Lario, lurks in the shadows, harboring bitter feelings.

Just before Neal arrives in Rome, a young shoplifter, portrayed by Ania Pieroni, meets a gruesome fate—a brutal razor-slasher silently claims her life. Following this, a chilling letter reaches Neal, stating that his writings have incited a killing frenzy. In a desperate bid for safety, he reaches out to law enforcement, leading to Detective Giermani, played by Giuliano Gemma, spearheading the investigation alongside his capable partner, Inspector Altieri, portrayed by Carola Stagnaro.

As the body count rises, the killer’s next victims include Tilde, a captivating journalist, and her lover, who are murdered in a terrifying ambush at home. The slaughter continues as Neal’s landlord’s daughter, Maria, portrayed by Lara Wendel, unwittingly stumbles into the killer’s lair and meets a horrific end, hacked to bits with an ax.

Amidst the terror, Neal grows increasingly suspicious of a television interviewer, Christiano Berti, portrayed by John Steiner, whose obsessive interest in Neal’s novels raises red flags. One harrowing night, as they surveil Berti’s residence, an ax-wielding maniac brutally dispatches him. In a twist of fate, Gianni, played by Christian Borromeo, witnesses the aftermath but is powerless to prevent the chaos. The following day, the detective’s insights about Berti’s fixation lend hope that the murders may come to a halt, yet tragedy strikes when Bullmer, in a public square, becomes another victim.

Haunted by the gruesome events and a crucial confession he overheard, Gianni returns to the crime scene, only to be met by his own demise. Meanwhile, Jane suffers a terrifying attack at home when the ax-wielding killer breaks in, brutally incapacitating her. In a shocking revelation, Neal is unmasked as the deranged murderer, driven by the resurfacing of a long-buried memory involving another victim, Eva Robins, from his troubled youth.

As the storm of insanity swirls around him, it’s revealed that while Berti was behind some of the brutal killings, it was Neal who claimed the lives of his assistant, Bullmer, Gianni, and even Jane. In a climactic scene, Inspector Altieri arrives only to fall victim to Neal’s unhinged rage. In a bloody conclusion, Giermani and Anne confront the horror within the house, leading to Neal’s own devastating end as he feigns death only to turn on Giermani. When he attempts to eliminate Anne, fate intervenes with a cruel twist, resulting in Neal’s accidental demise via a fallen sculpture, leaving Anne engulfed in terror as she screams in the rain, trapped within the remnants of the horrifying chaos he unleashed.
