Stan and Ollie arrive in a Swiss village hoping their mousetrap business will boom because the country is rich in cheese. They are met with indifference from the locals, who doubt the duo's schemes. A crafty cheese shop owner dupes them with counterfeit currency and steals their merchandise, leaving the pair penniless and skeptical of Swiss goodwill.

Broke and hungry, they seek a meal at a local inn but cannot pay their bill. The stern chef forces them into dishwashing duties, and their clumsiness only stokes his ire. The inn's kitchen becomes a stage for their continual humiliation and misfortune.

Victor Albert, a composer staying at the inn with his assistant Edward, is trying to write an opera that will surpass his wife Anna. He resents Anna's success and rebuffs her attempts at reconciliation. His personal and professional ego creates tension that threads through the inn's daily life.
