Richard “Dick” Purcell, played by Dick Powell, is a humble taxi driver with big dreams of becoming a successful singer. His passion for singing drives him to pursue a career in entertainment, and his talent is unexpectedly recognized when a pair of theater critics happen to hear him singing while riding in his cab. Recognizing his potential, one critic recommends him to a radio producer, played by Grant Mitchell, who is always on the lookout for fresh talent. During this process, Alice Hughes, portrayed by Joan Blondell, the producer’s secretary, becomes captivated by Dick’s singing ability. She is immediately smitten and takes it upon herself to arrange an audition for him with the sponsor, Mrs. Flagenheim, played by Louise Fazenda. Unfortunately, Dick arrives late for the audition, which causes him to miss his chance at stardom, leaving him disappointed and frustrated.

Determined to help him succeed, Mrs. Flagenheim decides she needs to find a singer with a certain charm and romantic appeal to promote her high-quality cheese products, believing Italy might hold the perfect candidate. Accompanied by Alice, she travels to Venice, Italy, to discover a promising talent. Meanwhile, Dick, eager to chase his dream, manages to stow away on the ship and works his way onto the boat to Italy, seeking his own opportunity to shine. In Venice, he reconnects with his old friend and mentor, Professor Adolphe Menjou, who had already gone ahead of him to use his connections and help him gain a foothold in the music scene. With hard work and a bit of luck, Dick and the professor manage to land some jobs as gondoliers during a local event, presenting a unique chance for Dick to showcase his vocal talent.

Mrs. Flagenheim hears him singing during this event and is promptly impressed, believing he is the authentic Italian singer “Ricardo Purcelli,” and quickly signs him to a contract. His true identity remains a secret, and both Alice and Dick continue to hide the truth from everyone. They all return to New York, but their charade begins to unravel when Dick’s fellow taxi drivers recognize him as the same man who arrived in Venice. Despite his initial shock and disappointment, Alice encourages him to embrace the persona of “Ricardo,” and his authentic singing talent soon transforms him into a radio sensation, captivating audiences everywhere.

As Dick’s fame grows, his counterfeit persona begins to cause complications. Alice’s jealous and vengeful ex-boyfriend uncovers the truth, forcing Dick to confront a difficult choice: continue living as Ricardo Purcelli to maintain his new lifestyle of fame and fortune or abandon the act and pursue genuine happiness with Alice. The situation becomes even more tense when rumors of Dick’s deception start to spread in the press, some of whom whip up sensational stories. Alice, feeling conflicted and afraid of losing him, falsely tells Dick that she wouldn’t marry him if he gave up the pretense, which adds to his inner turmoil.

Eventually, feeling betrayed and fed up with the façade, Dick decides to come clean on the air, revealing the truth about his real identity and his dreams. He walks out of the studio, leaving his falsehood behind, but the public reaction is overwhelmingly positive—thousands of fans write in, expressing that they love his singing regardless of his identity. Meanwhile, Alice’s feelings remain strong, and she desperately searches for Dick, wanting to tell him that she is willing to be with him anywhere in the world.

The plot reaches a peak when Professor de Vinci accidentally crashes into Dick’s cab on the street and rushes him to the studio just in time for the live broadcast of the Flagenheim Cheese Hour featuring the Broadway Gondolier. As Dick takes the stage and sings before the national audience, Alice comes rushing into the studio, finally able to confess her love for him. Their emotional reunion culminates in a heartfelt moment on the air, proving that true talent and love cannot be hidden behind a mask, and that genuine dreams are worth pursuing no matter the obstacles.
