A Song Is Born

In the Totten Foundation’s Victorian mansion in New York City, the mild-mannered Hobart Frisbee and six fellow academics, among them Professor Magenbruch, have lived in seclusion for nine years, writing a comprehensive musical encyclopedia and existing without a radio. When two window washers with a radio quiz stumble into their world, they realize there are many forms of popular music—swing, jive, jump, blues, two-beat Dixie, boogie-woogie, bebop—that they know nothing about. Eager to learn, Hobart, the Foundation’s resident expert on “folk music,” heads into the city to observe the music scene and invites the artists he meets to visit the Foundation.

The professors’ quiet routine collides with Honey Swanson, a nightclub singer on the run from her gangster boyfriend Tony Crow, who hopes to marry her so she cannot testify against him. Honey enters the sheltered household, prompting resistance from Miss Bragg, the housekeeper Miss Bragg. She brings the latest sounds and introduces the scholars to a troupe of performers, turning the mansion into a living studio. The visiting musicians include Louis Armstrong, Charlie Barnet, Tommy Dorsey, and Lionel Hampton, among others, filling the space with energy and a rush of new rhythms.

The room fills with the music of hits like A Song Is Born, Daddy-O, I’m Getting Sentimental Over You, Flying Home, and Redskin Rumba, as the scholars discover a language they had never learned. Honey—glamorous, persuasive, and relentlessly curious—wins Hobart over with a teasing charm, even whispering the playful lure of “yum yum.” > “yum yum” The earnest professor, who finished Princeton at age 13, decides to act on his feelings and buys an engagement ring; the next morning he proposes. Their plan is abruptly interrupted by a call from Honey’s supposed father, and Tony convinces Hobart to travel to Rancocas, New Jersey to be wed at once. The whole Foundation crew follows, while Miss Bragg tries to intervene, only to be knocked out and hidden away in a closet.

Back at the Foundation, Miss Totten and her lawyer arrive with orders to shut the place down. Tony’s two men crash the gathering, holding everyone at gunpoint and forcing Honey to proceed with a coerced ceremony before a deaf, absent-minded justice of the peace. Honey resists the marriage, but the hostages—professors and musicians alike—stand united. In a climactic turn that favors sound over violence, the ensemble uses music to overwhelm the gunmen: a drum crashes, a rug is pulled away, and the tide of danger recedes as Frizzy delivers a decisive blow to Tony.

The moment of truth finally arrives as Honey confronts her fears and embraces Hobart’s steadfast promise. Through a final, fervent display of affection—bolstered by the music that brought them together—she accepts a future built on partnership, imagination, and the transformative power of song. The Foundation’s world, once cut off from the broader culture, proves that rhythm, harmony, and shared creativity can outshine danger and seal a lasting love.
