Bert Handy, Sid James, runs Helping Hand, a bustling staffing agency born from the drab hum of the local labour exchange where people grumble about the steady shortage of decent jobs. He doesn’t just fill empty chairs—he treats every assignment as a fresh opportunity to test a loose, sprawling network of workers, confident that any odd job can be matched with the right person if you throw enough candidates at it.

Among the first recruits are Francis Courtenay, Kenneth Williams; Delia King, Liz Fraser; Lily Duveen, Joan Sims; Gabriel Dimple, Charles Hawtrey; Mike Weston, Bill Owen; and Montgomery Infield-Hopping, Terence Longdon. Bert decides to hire them all, banking on a chorus of mismatched talents that could spark into success with the right nudge and a touch of luck.

Their first client is a man who speaks gobbledygook, leaving the staff baffled as they try to decode his demands. Yet the business quickly broadens—Delia is sent on a wardrobe fitting for Mr. Delling, Jimmy Thompson a man plotting a surprise for his wife, Helen Delling Carole Shelley. The plan seems harmless enough until the wife unexpectedly returns home, turning the whole ruse on its head and forcing everyone to improvise in real time.

Meanwhile, Sam Twist, Kenneth Connor, is dispatched to a baby-sitting job that turns out to have no baby at all. The client is Mrs. Panting, Penny Panting Fenella Fielding, who is trying to stir jealousy in her husband, and Sam finds himself caught in a comical tangle that lands him with a black eye and a mess of clever excuses. The next day, Francis is sent to walk a pet, only to discover the “pet” is a chimpanzee; the staff quickly realize that people who work in transport and logistics tend to be wary of apes, a running joke that threads through their chaotic schedule.

Lily Duveen, at a wine-tasting evening, keeps busy collecting invitation cards from attendees while sampling the wines and turning a few moments into theatrical moments of intoxicated flair. The crew’s next big moment comes when a man from Amalgamated Scrap-Iron requests a stand-in in the hospital outpatients queue. Bert promises to send someone, but the enigmatic request forces the top staffer to step in himself, leading to a surprising tour of the hospital and an accidental brush with prestige.

Francis’s next assignment sees him as a model, only to discover the job is for a bee-keeper’s helmet advertisement, a misalignment that leaves him crestfallen but quietly comic. A later shift places him with a bickering couple—one side speaks German, the other English—and his involvement somehow helps the couple understand one another again, a small victory amid the general farce.

Boxing comes calling when Boxer Vincent drops in, seeking four helpers to serve as seconds for his fighter Dynamite Dan, a name that adds extra fizz to the already chaotic roster. At the venue, however, Dan is terrified of his opponent, Mickey McGee, and tries to fake an injury, prompting Gabriel Dimple to step in for a more dramatic showdown. Sam, ever hopeful, expects a secret spying mission at the Forth Bridge, only to learn he’s needed to fill a fourth in a bridge game, a misunderstanding that becomes part of Helping Hand’s lore.

Back at the office, the staff are pulled into preparations for the Ideal House Exhibition, with a cascade of demonstrations that end in calamity. A stint at an exclusive men’s club tests the team’s resolve since silence is a hard rule to keep, and the chaos continues as Miss Cooling implements a new filing system. Cards end up mixed up, and chaos reigns as everyone gets someone else’s assignment, prompting a reluctant but undeniable sense of unity as the staff rally to salvage the day.

The gobbledygook man returns, and this time Francis is there to translate. He turns out to be their landlord, a figure who has been ready to announce that he must vacate. The landlord’s real interest, however, lies in property development, and his demand becomes a test of whether the team can stay together long enough to prove their worth. In a bold, whirlwind finale, they demolish the old house as a show of solidarity, only to be told that the landlord plans to replace it with a luxurious block of flats, turning a moment of potential ruin into a triumphant, if ironic, ending.

Throughout the chaos, the cast threads through the narrative like a living mosaic, each scene building on the last with a chorus of misadventures that never truly resolve but always move forward. The ensemble’s resilience, the clever improvisations, and the oddball pairings—all of it coalesces into a portrait of everyday ambition in a world that rewards wit more than precision. It’s a comic collage about people who grab for opportunity, stumble, pick themselves up again, and somehow keep the doors open for the next strange assignment.
