Swami, a poor jeweller, marries Radha and the couple leaves their hometown for Mumbai to start anew. They begin building a life together and soon welcome their children, including a son named Anand and a daughter. The move marks the start of their dream-filled journey.

Anand gains admission to a top school after his parents' dream is explained to the principal. The boy speaks up for himself and the principal is moved, granting him admission. This moment marks Anand's path toward a future that could lead to America.

Swami notices a beautiful antique rocking chair in a shop and is drawn to it for its timeless grace. The chair costs 18,500 rupees, far beyond his means, while Radha secretly hopes to gift it to him someday. Their shared dream begins to orbit around this coveted piece.

Radha is diagnosed with bilateral renal artery stenosis, a condition treatable by a simple operation. The doctors quote 25,000 rupees for the surgery, a sum Swami resolves to raise. He starts setting aside every possible coin, envisioning a healthier future for his wife.

One day, Swami returns home to find the rocking chair in their living space, and Radha confesses she used their savings to buy it. He discovers the money box is empty and is torn between frustration and the love that moved Radha. He chooses to forgive, still determined to save for surgery.

Radha experiences severe pain and passes away after urging Swami to sit on the chair. In her final moment, she reveals her wish for Anand to settle in America, a dream she hopes to see realized. Swami carries this message as a guiding sorrow.

Anand becomes a successful young man working in a multinational bank and dreams of settling in the United States. He confides to his father about marrying his love, Pooja, and Swami agrees to the alliance. The family’s hopes broaden to a future free of financial worry.

Pooja gives birth to a baby boy named Adarsh, and Swami relishes the chance to spend time with his grandson. The household grows with the new baby and the chair's symbolism resurfaces through family ties. The joy underscores the dream of a better life for all.

While playing outside, Adarsh trips over Swami's rocking chair, causing a cut on his forehead. Enraged by the accident, Pooja sells the chair while Swami is away. The loss hits Swami hard, magnifying the chair's emotional weight.

When Anand returns from work, he discovers the chair is gone and realizes Pooja's impulsive act. Pooja tries to retrieve it from the shop but discovers it's already sold. Swami forgives her, but the absence of the chair gnaws at him and keeps him awake at night.

Anand learns he cannot secure a visa to America, a turn that reshapes the family's plans for emigration. He resolves not to go without his father, and Pooja agrees, sensing Swami's desire to stay with his family. Swami then decides to move into a care home, hoping to honor Radha's wishes.

Swami bids his son and daughter-in-law goodbye as he settles into a care home. He eventually finds the old rocking chair in his room and realizes Radha knew its true value all along. The film ends with Swami breaking down in tears, hugging the chair as a symbol of memories and love.
