At the end of Summer of 84, it’s revealed that Officer Mackey is indeed the Cape May Slayer, responsible for kidnapping and murdering local boys. After Davey and his friends uncover evidence, they alert the police, leading to a manhunt for Mackey. However, the killer manages to hide in Davey’s house and later kidnaps Davey and Woody, taking them to a remote offshore island for a deadly game of cat and mouse. The confrontation culminates in Mackey catching Woody and killing him, but he spares Davey, instead forcing him to live with the fear that Mackey might return at any moment. This chilling choice leaves Davey haunted, knowing that the threat is never truly gone. The film closes with a mirror of its opening scene: Davey cycling through his neighborhood, his love interest Nikki waving goodbye, but with a tense new awareness, as Tommy and Curtis deliberately avoid him. Finally, Davey stops outside Mackey’s empty house and sees a newspaper with Mackey’s face, confirming that the killer remains at large.
