In the end, it turns out that the mysterious witch plaguing Martha’s Vineyard is not Mrs. Halverson, as initially suspected, but rather the town’s seemingly unassuming baseball umpire. Throughout the story, Noah and his friends notice that this minor character has soil on his shoes and a burn scar on his hand, clues that lead them to suspect him. When they finally break into his house, they discover evidence confirming his identity as the witch, including the black cloth and broomstick. The witch’s motive is revealed to be the soul feeding, with young children being the source of her power. She kidnaps kids like Ronnie, the first boy we saw in the beginning who returned after being taken, to drain their energy and maintain her existence.

Now, Gene, the grumpy old man and former detective, plays a crucial role in stopping her. He rushes back to Martha’s Vineyard and confronts the witch, shooting her with silver bullets, which are effective against her kind. This moment is significant because it finally brings an end to her reign of terror. With her defeated, the kidnapped children are freed, including Ben, who needs some time to fully recover but eventually gets back to his old self and hits the baseball again. The story concludes with Gene visiting his wife, hinting at unresolved grief over his son’s fate. The movie ends on a hopeful note, showing that the children are safe and the evil has been vanquished, even if some mysteries remain. This ending emphasizes themes of bravery, community, and the unexpected nature of evil lurking in the most ordinary people.
