Straight On till Morning

Brenda is a plain young woman from Liverpool who writes fairy tales for children and lives at home with her mother. When she tells her mother that she plans to leave for London to find a father for her unborn baby, the film follows her cautious, often desperate ascent into a city that feels both exciting and menacing.

Upon arriving in London, she is jolted by a brief, awkward moment with an attractive young man, Peter, who doesn’t offer more than a nod or a second look. Her transition into city life is rough: she ends up in a shabby bedsit, finds a job at a fashionable boutique run by a man named Jimmy Lindsay, and takes a spare room from a coworker, Caroline, in the hope of attending Caroline’s parties and meeting someone suitable. The dynamic in the flat is tense and fragile, and Brenda clings to the idea that a romance might be just around the corner.

Peter, who seems to drift between a self-imposed distance and occasional charm, lives with an older, alcoholic woman. He invites Brenda upstairs, and a chilling moment follows when she enters his room and, unseen, screams. The story unfolds to reveal that Caroline has become involved with another coworker, Joey, which devastates Brenda and makes her feel more isolated than ever. In a moment of impulse, she retrieves a stray dog she encounters on the street, hoping the animal might help her bridge the distance to Peter. She returns the dog to his address, but Peter’s reaction when she later questions him about taking the dog hints at a darker motive.

Back at the flat, Brenda washes and pretties the dog, and a simple act of returning the animal becomes a doorway into Peter’s world. He begins to shower her with baby gifts as Brenda’s mother grows more anxious about her daughter’s silence and detours in her life. The police become a real possibility as Brenda’s mother checks her last known number, visits Caroline, and learns that the dog’s lead, broken and abandoned, bears Peter’s address.

The tension intensifies when Caroline visits Peter’s home and is eventually killed by him with a knife. The implication that Caroline is buried in the garden heightens Brenda’s fear and fearsomely foreshadows the danger she herself faces. Brenda returns to a changed home life with a striking makeover—hair altered, clothes chosen, makeup applied—yet Peter insists on loving her just as she was, even as he narrates a fairy story that is intercut with flashbacks suggesting he has killed more than one woman.

The couple’s relationship seems to be moving toward a fragile happiness, as news reports surface about missing persons cases—Brenda and Caroline. Peter forbids Brenda from going out, tightening his grip as he presents himself as her sole protector. Brenda, who now hints at potential pregnancy, becomes the object of Peter’s unsettling fixation. His idea of love is cold and controlling, and he promises a surprise only to reveal a disturbing tape that records him killing the dog and Caroline. The reel scrolls through Brenda’s terror as she tries to escape, but the doors are locked and Peter closes in, insisting he does not want to hurt her—yet his actions tell a far different story.

In the final act, Peter sits alone in the silent aftermath of the chaos he has created. There is no sign of Brenda, and the room carries the weight of what has occurred. The film closes on a bleak note, leaving the audience with a chilling portrait of obsession, manipulation, and a young woman’s perilous pursuit of a future she hoped would be hopeful and safe.
