Dusty Russell is dropped off in a rural Kentucky town and goes into a local bar, unable to pay for his drink. The bartender offers him a $100 job to drive a souped-up moonshine car. He accepts, setting in motion a dangerous bootleg venture.

Dusty prepares for the bootleg run but the bar owner and local police close in. He escapes in the 1939 Dodge, evading the sheriff and state police. The chase ends when his car rolls, destroying 50 gallons of moonshine in the trunk.

The bartender refuses to pay Dusty and his backers attack him with bouncers. A mysterious stranger joins the fray, and Dusty and Jo-Ann escape with the help of the newcomer. The group slips away into the night as their bond grows.

The stranger is revealed to be Buddy Love, who wants to enter a demolition derby but lacks a car. Dusty offers to use the bootlegger's car for the derby, and they become partners. Dusty also begins a romance with Jo-Ann as their partnership deepens.

Dusty drives in the demolition derby and is the last car standing, winning a prize of $300. The adrenaline and skill propel him into the world of high-stakes stunt driving. The crowd roars as he proves his nerve behind the wheel.

The derby promoter Gene Drew is revealed as the head of a traveling auto daredevil troupe, The Circus of Death. He hires Dusty and Buddy to join the act, instantly elevating Dusty’s profile. Dusty begins to be recognized as a top stunt driver on the circuit.

Dusty becomes a standout stunt driver, performing the dive bomber by launching a speeding car off a ramp at 55 mph and crashing onto parked cars. The stunt earns him fame across the touring circuit. Audiences marvel at his precision and daring.

Buddy Love performs The Slide of Death and dreams of moving up to main stunt driving. Meanwhile, Crash Chambers grows resentful and threatens Dusty’s rising status. Tensions escalate as the team dynamics become unstable.

Dusty ties the world record with a 60-foot dive bomber during the Texas tour stop and is celebrated with a trophy. Gene challenges him to push further, aiming for a 100-foot jump. The crowd senses a bigger showdown is coming.

During a planned head-on crash, Crash sabotages Dusty by cutting his safety belt. Dusty attempts the stunt but is injured when he lands on five parked cars. The audience watches in shock as the danger becomes personal.

Dusty recovers in the hospital while Gene arranges a second chance at a 100-foot dive. He is cleared to return to the stunt world and the plan for a bigger leap is put in motion. The team rallies as Dusty steels himself for the next attempt.

Dusty returns to perform the 100-foot dive after his hospital stay and succeeds in setting a new record. He lands on five parked cars and is knocked unconscious by the impact. The crowd erupts, but the victory comes at a grim cost.

In the final scene, Jo-Ann boards a Greyhound bus alone, tears in her eyes as the credits roll. The movie closes on the couple's fractured fate and Dusty's legacy as a daredevil. The road ahead for Jo-Ann remains uncertain.
