Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith

Anakin kills Dooku in a moment of rage that directly violates Jedi principles. After Dooku knocks Obi-Wan unconscious, Anakin succumbs to his anger and fear for his mentor, driving his lightsaber through the Sith lord. This act marks the first major step in Anakin's descent toward the dark side, as the Jedi code forbids killing a defenseless opponent. Palpatine watches approvingly and begins to see Anakin as vulnerable to manipulation.

Earlier in the film, Anakin struggles with visions of Padmé's death, showing his vulnerability to fear and loss.

Anakin intervenes because he believes Palpatine holds the key to saving his wife Padmé from death, which he has seen in his visions. When Anakin discovers that Chancellor Palpatine is actually Darth Sidious, he initially wants Windu to bring the Sith lord to justice. However, when Windu refuses and moves to kill Palpatine, Anakin chooses to protect the only person he thinks can help him prevent his nightmare of Padmé dying.

Throughout the film, Anakin's visions of Padmé's death and his desperation to prevent them are a recurring source of conflict.

Anakin's betrayal is triggered by his decision to kill Mace Windu and align with Palpatine. After stabbing Windu and throwing him out the window, Anakin is trapped, he has committed an unforgivable act against a Jedi Master. Palpatine Rename him Darth Vader and orders him to destroy all Jedi at the Temple. With no way to return to the Jedi fold, Anakin fully embraces the Sith, beginning with the massacre at the Jedi Temple including the killing of librarian Jocasta Nu.

Anakin's growing distrust of the Jedi Council and his secret marriage to Padmé have already created distance between him and the Order.

Order 66 is a secret protocol embedded in the clone army's programming that commands them to eliminate all Jedi. Palpatine, as Supreme Chancellor and the true Sith Lord, had pre-planned this contingency. When the order is given, clone troopers across the galaxy turn on their Jedi commanders without hesitation, viewing them as traitors to the Republic. This betrayal wipes out the Jedi Order in a single blow.

The film hints at the clone army's programming when they are first introduced, with subtle suggestions of their vulnerability to orders.

Obi-Wan survives because he is in the middle of fighting General Grievous when Order 66 is issued. While the clone troopers surrounding him raise their weapons, a random rocket explosion provides cover. Using the chaos, Obi-Wan mounts a lizard-like creature and rides it through the planetary sinkholes, escaping while the clones are distracted. He then learns of Anakin's transformation into Vader through security recordings.

The Utapau setting with its deep sinkholes and mobile creatures was established early, providing the escape route.

Obi-Wan leaves Anakin because his former apprentice has become a dangerous Sith lord who shows no willingness to turn back. During their duel, Obi-Wan repeatedly urges Anakin to surrender, but Anakin refuses, driven by his belief that Palpatine can save Padmé. When Anakin makes a reckless leap over Obi-Wan, Kenobi seizes the opportunity to sever his limbs. As Anakin burns in the lava, Obi-Wan takes his lightsaber and departs, believing Anakin is too far gone to save.

The emotional weight of their friendship and Obi-Wan's earlier hesitation in fighting Anakin foreshadow this heartbreaking choice.

After being left for dead on Mustafar, Anakin is rescued by Palpatine, who arrives at the volcanic facility. Though severely burned and with badly damaged limbs, Anakin is kept alive through extensive surgical enhancements and cybernetic alterations. He is encased in the iconic black suit that becomes his signature look, transforming him into the fearsome Darth Vader. This physical transformation mirrors his complete spiritual transformation to the dark side.

The film sets up Anakin's fear of death and desire for power to save those he loves, making his willing transformation into a machine emotionally logical.

With Anakin transformed into Darth Vader, he and Palpatine begin overseeing the construction of the Death Star, the Empire's ultimate weapon. This marks the completion of their plan to transform the Republic into the Galactic Empire. The weapon represents the final step in crushing any resistance, as the Republic collapses and the Empire rises. The Death Star becomes the symbol of imperial tyranny that will later threaten the galaxy.

The film's opening establishes the Clone Wars as a pretext for military expansion, making the transition to imperial weaponry logical.
