During a summer festival, the Angel of Death orders his Soultaker to collect five victims: Zack, Brad, Tommy, Candice, and Natalie. The grim command sets the film's supernatural hunt in motion and makes it clear that death has a personal agenda. Brad, high on cocaine, speeds through the night and agrees to give Natalie a ride home. In a split second he swerves to avoid the Soultaker and crashes. Candice dies instantly, while Zack, Natalie, Brad, and Tommy slip into comas as their souls depart their bodies.

The Soultaker retrieves Candice's soul at the crash site and reports back to the Angel of Death. The master orders him to recover the remaining souls, turning the accident into a controlled hunt. The rules of the afterlife tighten around the group.
