Will Swenson and Danny Tarasevich Jensen are the remaining members of an LDS boy-band from Provo, Utah that recently lost its third member for “artistic reasons.” After searching for a new third member, they decide on the star of a local production of Forever Plaid at a community theater. He declines without reservation. They then stage an impromptu try-out of one of the co-stars, Kirby Heyborne as Kirby Laybourne, and recruit him for the group.
The band needs a manager, so Will and Danny hire their nephew, Grayson Jensen Peter D. Brown for the job. His first assignment is a gig as the target of a pie-throwing booth at a local fair, followed by a wedding reception in a church gymnasium. The performance doesn’t go well, and the group argues with their manager, who uses the words “fetchers,” “flippin’,” “heck” and “butt.” Will calmly interjects, “Watch your language!” and the group fires Grayson, replacing him with an old girlfriend of Kirby’s who works at the Provo Theatre Company, Jill Keith Jennifer Erekson.
Meanwhile, Will has lined up a fireside performance. A listener with a home recording studio offers to cut their music and asks, “What’s your band’s name?” In a park the members brainstorm and settle on the name Everkleen, which they eventually spell as Everclean. They also hire a local ballet instructor, Yvonne Bolschweiler Maureen Eastwood, as the group’s choreographer.
After recording their first album, Everclean begins to land paying gigs and launches a tour that sweeps through Salt Lake City, Logan, Salem, and Moscow (Idaho). A newspaper review, written with unusually sophisticated phrasing, convinces the band that it is praising them when in fact the wording was lukewarm.
During a show at Utah State University, Kirby loses his CTR ring down a drain just before the performance, and the band’s manager has the drain taken apart and the ring recovered to be returned to Kirby mid-show.
The tour’s next stop is the Jensen family reunion, the first time they’ve seen Grayson since his firing. The reunion goes smoothly, with Everclean drawing applause, and Grayson reintroduces the crowd to Moosebutter, a singing group he has been managing, who receive a wildly positive reception.
The Everclean tour culminates at Centerville High School in Provo, where the Jensen brothers once attended. The band manager persuades Will to listen to a tape Kirby made of a song he wrote and wants to perform. Will and Danny call Kirby, who listens as they leave a message. Kirby arrives, and Will concedes that the group cannot get along without him. The final scene features Kirby’s song performed by Everclean, with Will and Danny providing backup vocals.
