In a snowbound town, artist Shimamura seeks renewal and reconnects with Komako, a geisha he once met, sparking a tender bond. Komako, foster daughter of a local family, is betrothed to their son Yukio, who is dying of consumption, while his sister Yuko harbors resentment toward her. Shimamura returns to Tokyo, promising a quick return; Komako breaks with her patron and the family loses its home. When he does not come back, Komako discovers Shimamura and Yuko share a past in Tokyo, forcing her to confront a seemingly inevitable destiny.
