Eccentric teenager Vivienne Freeman hitches a ride with Alex Hughes, a reluctant recluse visiting from England. Their journey to her hometown of Wawa, Ontario, marks the beginning of an unforeseen series of events.

Tragically, as they arrive in Wawa, Vivienne suffers a fatal accident when a transport truck collides with their vehicle. Alex survives with only a nosebleed, but the incident leaves him profoundly affected.

After the accident, Alex is tasked with delivering gifts that Vivienne had bought for her mother, Linda. Upon his arrival, he discovers Linda's detached demeanor, as she has just learned of her daughter's death.

Linda, deeply affected by autism, exhibits unusual behaviors that complicate her situation. Her compulsive cleanliness obsession prevents her from dealing with the trash, which was previously managed by Vivienne.

Understanding Linda's need for assistance, Alex decides to stay for a few days. He promises to help her with the trash while also making arrangements for Vivienne's funeral, showcasing his compassion during this difficult time.

During his stay in Wawa, Alex begins to form a relationship with Maggie, Linda's neighbor. However, misunderstandings arise as Linda mistakenly believes Maggie to be a sex worker.

Tensions escalate when Clyde, the local Chief of Police, grows jealous of Alex's connection with Maggie. In an effort to separate them, he informs Maggie about Alex's recent release from prison related to a man's death.

Faced with uncertainty, Maggie confronts Alex about his past. He reveals his involvement in a tragic incident that led to the death of a man who had killed his own son while driving under the influence, a haunting regret that shadows him.

The burden of loss weighs heavily on Alex as he reflects on his brief affair and the discovery of his son, whom he was on his way to meet when tragedy struck. This revelation deepens the emotional complexity of his character.

After Alex departs to continue his voyage to Winnipeg, Linda experiences a change of heart. She reluctantly allows Maggie into her home to help with the garbage, marking a significant shift in her ability to accept assistance.

In the wake of their shared grief and misunderstandings, the characters begin to forge unexpected bonds. Each individual grows through their interactions, navigating their own pasts while finding solace in each other.

As time goes on, Maggie and Linda learn to support one another. Despite the initial friction, their collaborative efforts create a new path toward healing amid the sorrow of their loss.
