Sita Ramam (2022) – Full Plot Summary & Ending Explained

Read the complete plot breakdown of Sita Ramam (2022), including all key story events, major twists, and the ending explained in detail. Discover what really happened—and what it all means.

The story unfolds against the turbulent backdrop of Operation Gibraltar and spans several decades, weaving a complex tale of patriotism, sacrifice, love, and political intrigue. It begins in 1964, illustrating how Pakistani extremist Ansari aims to sow discord between Kashmiri Pandits and Muslims, manipulating the Indian Army as a pawn by orchestrating a plan involving indoctrinated teenagers who pose as Kashmir natives. These young individuals are brainwashed and inserted into Kashmir, but their presence sparks a series of events that influence the broader conflict.

Fast forward to 1985, where the narrative introduces Afreen (played by Rashmika Mandanna), a fiery Pakistani activist known for her provocative actions. She faces a stern demand from her university dean in London to apologize to Indian philanthropist Anand Mehta (played by Tinnu Anand) for her role in burning his car in protest of the Pakistani flag. When Afreen refuses to apologize, Mehta compels her to pay a hefty compensation of 10 lakh INR or face imprisonment. Driven by her desire to reconcile her family history, Afreen embarks on a journey to Karachi, Pakistan, to find her estranged grandfather, Abu Tariq (portrayed by Sachin Khedekar), a former Brigadier in the Pakistani Army. Tragically, she learns he died of illness just days before her arrival.

Her mission shifts when she is entrusted with a mysterious letter written in 1965 by Indian Army Lieutenant Ram (played by Dulquer Salmaan) to Sita Mahalakshmi (portrayed by Mrunal Thakur) of Hyderabad, India. The letter was never delivered due to circumstances surrounding Ram’s mission. According to Tariq’s will, Afreen stands to inherit his wealth only after she successfully delivers this letter, which may hold clues about Ram’s fate and identity. Facing limited options, Afreen heads to Hyderabad, looking for Sita Mahalakshmi—a woman associated with the palace of Noor Jahan, a princess and the palace donor.

In Hyderabad, Afreen enlists the help of her Indian associate Balaji, and together they seek information about Ram. They learn that Ram served in Kashmir during 1965, where his actions and sacrifices became pivotal. Vikas Varma, Ram’s regiment-mate, recounts a harrowing story: Ram and a group of indoctrinated teenagers had established themselves as Kashmir locals, but were betrayed when Ansari leaked their details to Indian authorities. This led to a tragic confrontation where Ram’s superior officer, Vishnu Sharma (also played by Gautham Vasudev Menon), was ordered to eliminate the insurgents. Most of the teenagers were killed, but Ram’s heroism helped quell a religious riot, restoring calm and earning recognition.

During this period, Ram begins receiving letters from a woman claiming to be his wife, Sita—an affection that puzzles him because no one has claimed to be his wife before. These letters, though mysterious, reveal deep emotional connections, prompting Ram to seek her out. He eventually locates Sita in Hyderabad and finds that she was a trained Bharatanatyam dancer and closely connected to the royal palace. Their bond grows, and Ram even proposes marriage to her, but she leaves abruptly, overwhelmed by circumstances beyond their control.

As the story unfolds, further revelations come to light. Noor Jahan, the palace princess, was deeply in love with Ram, but her destiny and family obligations prevented their union. Noor’s family was in financial trouble, and her brother arranged a marriage for her with the Prince of Oman—despite her feelings for Ram. Her love story was made public through a newspaper photograph, causing a scandal that ultimately forced Noor to leave the palace and Kashmir to pursue her own destiny. Rekha, a confidante, explains Noor’s tragic dilemma, highlighting how her love for Ram was her greatest sacrifice.

The narrative then shifts back to Kashmir, where Afreen and her companions discover that Ram and Vishnu (also Murali Sharma) had been involved in covert military operations to eliminate Ansari in Pakistan, succeeding in killing him but at a tragic cost. Ram’s mission ended with his capture and presumed execution, which was kept secret from all but a few. Vishnu reveals that Ram was executed in prison, and, perhaps more tragically, his sacrifice was overshadowed by accusations of treachery after a series of Pakistani retaliations that led to the death of many Indian soldiers.

Vishnu also confesses to Afreen—who he reveals is Waheeda (the girl Ram tried to protect and who is connected to the past)—that Ram was unjustly branded a traitor, and Sita had to endure societal disgrace. The heartbreaking truth is unveiled through letters and official documents: Ram was executed, and the Indian Army suffered severe casualties due to misinformation and political manipulation. Sita, in her grief, had lived with Ram’s memory, unaware of the full truth until these revelations surfaced.

In a poignant climax, Sita learns about Ram’s unwavering patriotism and sacrifice from the letters and official reports. She also discovers that Ram knew her identity and was proud of her decision to leave her royal life for love and duty. The narrative closes with a message of redemption: Afreen publicly apologizes for her earlier actions, and the Pakistani government releases Indian prisoners, including Waheeda, bringing a moment of hope and reconciliation. Sita is honored with a medal for Ram’s patriotism, symbolizing national gratitude for his sacrifice, while Afreen and others find peace, having restored the dignity of those lost and honoring their legacy.

This story, rich with emotional depth, heroism, and the enduring power of love across borders, reflects on the personal toll of political conflicts and honors those who serve and sacrifice for their nations.
