Jaya Raveena Tandon lives happily with her family. Her dad, Shekhar, is a big industrialist while her mother keeps watchful control from behind the couch. She also has a feisty younger sister, Sheetal, who does her bidding. At her school, Jaya’s best friend is Dushyant Shah Rukh Khan, a musically gifted but financially struggling student. After learning that Dushyant is short on funds to buy an instrument, she asks her sister to nudge their father to lend a hand. Being a caring and loving father, he obliges.
One late evening, a chilling phone call arrives. His brother-in-law is very sick. Jaya’s mother hurries to Delhi, where her brother lives, but en route she dies when the plane explodes during takeoff.
The story jumps forward ten years to 2004, where we meet new faces at BA Nayyar Commerce Science College. Here, Professor Pyarelal begins his first day as history professor and gets a notice about a Sunday picnic. A light banter with a colleague, Professor Chand Nath, reveals a marginal side character, Raj, who will later hint at a subplot.
We then see grown-up Jaya and Dushyant (JAADU) at a party with friends. Deven Bhojani’s character starts a raunchy round of Antakshari, and the circle introduces us to Sujit [Mohnish Behl] and Nisha [Navneet Nishan].
The next day, Jaya calls Sheetal, who is studying abroad, and Raj brings Dushyant’s latest album, which they watch on TV. Jaya, feeling neglected, reaches out to Dushyant’s mentor, Rajpal [Kiran Kumar], to vent about the busy singer, and their relationship appears strained. Off-screen, Jaya and Dushyant eventually break up.
A night of drinking ends with Dushyant alone, weeping for the life he once had. He encounters Sujit among the homeless and vows to look after him. Sujit leads him to Nisha’s new home, where her father Kamlesh [Avtar Gill] is celebrating a birthday. Nisha is relieved to learn that Dushyant and Jaya are no longer together.
Dushyant proposes to Nisha, but Nisha and Sujit begin to wedge Jaya and Dushyant apart. Kamlesh brings a business proposal for Dushyant, only to be dismissed by Rajpal. Nisha speaks to Jaya’s look-alike on the phone and then tells Dushyant that Jaya is coming to collect money Dushyant owes for inspiring all his songs. When Jaya arrives, Dushyant bluntly returns the money, and a heartbroken Jaya leaves. Sujit takes the money from her, and Kamlesh calls goons to eliminate Jaya.
Jaya’s death is treated as a murder, supported by police testimony that she was happy entering Dushyant’s place but sad leaving. The case is handed to Inspector Rahul [Amit Kumar], who plans to go abroad to the country where Sheetal is studying, hoping to manipulate her for clues about the Jaya–Dushyant affair.
In a foreign country, Rahul is accompanied by two unofficial aides who eavesdrop on his plan: one is a campy caricature and the other a girl named Renee. Balbir works with him on the ground. Meanwhile, Dushyant overhears Sujit and Nisha recounting their misdeeds. Rahul spends time with Sheetal to get closer to her, much to Raj’s chagrin. Raj and Sheetal participate in their Annual Day function, where Sheetal imagines Rahul as the other lead—a subplot meant to stretch the film.
Sujit delivers a menacing monologue about killing Rajpal, Kamlesh, and Nisha in his pursuit of wealth, briefly breaking the fourth wall. In the next scene, Nisha is strangled in her car. Dushyant arrives for a concert abroad, while Rahul and Balbir plan to meet him; he’s unavailable, so they instead speak to Rajpal, and Rahul convinces Rajpal to include them in Dushyant’s next performance at the college.
A tense exchange between Sujit and Kamlesh follows; the exact words aren’t heard, but anger and escalating calls hint at a deeper conspiracy. After learning the truth behind the wedge between Jaya and himself, Dushyant asks Sujit to meet him at their old gathering place. In the next moment, a drunk Sujit shouts the line, and a car, resembling the one Dushyant often drives, runs him down.
Rahul and Sheetal hurry to the college for the performance, hoping to meet Dushyant, who has supposedly left for India because he fell sick. Kamlesh is murdered next. Shekhar is alerted to Jaya’s death and asks Sheetal to return to India for safety. Rahul informs the Commissioner that he has found clues and knows who the killer is, as the press presses for action in a growing city-wide glare.
Sheetal finally returns home, only to find paraphernalia from the murders—masks, gloves, and rope. She asks her father for answers, but he remains silent. The police arrest Shekhar at that moment. He confesses and hints at one final metaphorical murder: the doomed truth about his daughter’s killer, Dushyant Kumar.
In the final moments, Dushyant reunites with his mentor, Rajpal, who asserts that Jaya and Dushyant’s love was real. Dushyant thanks Rajpal for “Everything” as the screen fades to an ending that feels both tragic and unresolved, leaving the audience to consider the price of passion, jealousy, and revenge. > “Jeet ka dusra naam sujit hai”
