Velan rides away from home with a heavy sense of duty to wed Sumathi and reunite the separated family. He carries only a picture of Sumathi from childhood and travels to Madras to pursue the arrangement. He learns that their guardian forbids a union between Parvathy's son and his sister-in-law's daughter, which fuels his resolve.

In Madras, Velan meets his friend Mano, who rounds up three roommates—Mani, Subha, and Ramasamy—to assist with the mission. The group agrees to help Velan locate Sumathi and navigate the social hurdles ahead. They start planning how to secure the alliance despite the obstacles.

A computer center generates a photo of Sumathi as an adolescent to guide Velan toward his target. The image gives the team a concrete clue to recognize her in public. Velan uses this lead to track her during their pursuit.

At the beach, Velan and his friends spot Sumathi playing tennis. He helps when she goes to fetch a ball and accidentally submerges her, but he manages to pull her from the water. After waking, she scolds him for not knowing how to swim.

The group follows Sumathi to a five-star restaurant where a flute performance ends with Sumathi kissing Velan's hand. To prove himself musical, Velan performs with various instruments, but Sumathi insults the display. His playful teasing only deepens her initial dislike.

Velan begins visiting Thaiyamma, Sumathi's guardian, and wins her over with his entertaining nature. He even lies by claiming his mother's name is Mahalakshmi to appear honorable. Thaiyamma approves of him, but Sumathi continues to hate Velan.

Sumathi's uncle and retired IG Natesan visits Velan to warn him to back off. Later, Velan and his friends verify Velan's lineage with Kaliannan Gounder, who confirms the truth and agrees to help by lying to the general to support Velan.

Velan's devotion deepens as Sumathi begins to trust him, and they decide to get engaged. He is attacked by men hired by Natesan and hospitalized; to demonstrate his seriousness, he returns with bandages and uses the display to prove his resolve before her.

On the engagement day, Sivamani, the manager at Sumathi's factory, uncovers that Velan is Parvathy's son. Sumathi, shocked by the revelation, cancels the engagement and shuns Velan.

Sivamani kills Natesan and frames Velan for the crime, throwing Velan's world into chaos. Velan escapes the police, while his friends, mother, and Kaliannan are arrested as his alleged accomplices.

Sivamani schemes to kill Velan and marry Sumathi for her wealth, manipulating Thaiyamma and dispatching a goon to capture Velan. Velan fights the thugs and calls the police to expose Sivamani's plot.

Velan reaches the wedding hall with police and exposes Sivamani’s scheme; Sivamani is arrested. Sumathi realises Velan's true love and asks his mother for her blessing to marry him. Velan and Sumathi finally marry, resolving the years-long drama.
