Victor Ballard, a carefree yet cash‑strapped sidewalk photographer, lives in a cramped New York studio with Polish immigrant painter Stefan Janowski. Their building mirrors the city’s extremes: downstairs, Gus Nelson discovers his wife has just given birth to quintuplets, while the solitary tenant beneath Gus, overwhelmed by despair, ends his life.
