Joe and Loretta Martin, with their baby Trudy and their dog, drive through a heavy storm and get stuck in the mud. They break into a nearby house to shelter for the night, finding it stocked with new food and clothing. The house appears abandoned at first glance.

Four kidnappers arrive at the house and reclaim it as their hideout, having already collected the ransom money for Tom Hansen and releasing the boy. They settle in while keeping a watchful eye on the Martins who are trapped inside. The tension builds as the occupants realize they are all in a dangerous standoff.

Tobey decides to let the Martins stay for the night to avoid trouble, but the family quickly realizes the men are kidnappers. The gang takes the Martins prisoner, turning the shelter into a tense captive situation. They must improvise to survive the dangerous standoff.

The gang tests whether the ransom money is marked by forcing Joe to go into town with Tobey to spend some of the bills, while Loretta and Trudy are held hostage. Pitch plans to kill Loretta and Trudy but Tobey and Joe return from town just in time to prevent it. The moment heightens the risk to the Martins.

A passing farmer discovers a marked bill near the injured dog and takes the dog to a veterinarian, enabling the FBI to connect the money trail to the hideout. The investigation gains a decisive lead.

Pitch returns to the house, betrays Tobey, and kills him. Joe fights Pitch and Loretta seizes a gun, shooting Pitch just before he can kill Joe. The Martins narrowly escape death as the police arrive at the scene.

Police arrive and the Martins are rescued. The dog earns a bravery medal for its role, symbolizing the courage shown by the family and their pet. The family begins to rebuild after the harrowing ordeal.
