Geologists Phillip Ames, Michael Shannon, and Betsy Ames, Nancy Paul, head to the legendary Gudjara Mountain after rumors swirl of a mystical, healing earth whose power might flow from the land itself. A sudden cave-in traps them and they die, leaving behind their young daughter Janet to be raised without parents in a landscape that feels charged with ancient secrets.
Janet is taken in by Shaman, Elizabeth of Toro, a revered figure among the native Zambouli people. Under her care, Janet grows into Sheena, Tanya Roberts, a fearless young woman who absorbs the jungle’s lore and discovers an extraordinary gift: the ability to communicate telepathically with animals. The vast expanse of Tigora remains relatively quiet, watched over by King Jabalani, Clifton Jones, whose rule brings a fragile harmony to the region.
Yet beneath the surface, trouble brews. Prince Otwani, Trevor Thomas, the king’s ambitious ex-football champion brother, schemes with Countess Zanda, France Zobda, to topple Jabalani and lay claim to the area’s titanium-rich lands. Some of the motive may be tangled with the soil’s rumored healing properties, a mystery never fully explained but clearly at the heart of the conspiracy.
Shaman experiences a vision foretelling the king’s death and rushes toward Tigora’s capital, Azan, to warn him. Along the way, she falls into the hands of corrupt police officers working for Zanda, setting in motion a perilous chain of events that could affect everyone in Tigora.
Vic Casey, Ted Wass, and his cameraman Fletch Agronsky, Donovan Scott, arrive in Tigora to film a story about the region’s legendary star. What begins as a straightforward piece soon reveals a far more dangerous plot at work. When King Jabalani is killed and Shaman is framed for the crime, Vic and Fletch realize they have stumbled onto a story that runs far deeper than a mere political coup.
A key moment occurs when Vic and Fletch accompany a mission to interview Shaman at a remote prison and witness Sheena’s dramatic rescue of Shaman, aided by her animal friends—Chango the elephant, Marika the zebra, and Tiki the chimpanzee. Although Shaman survives the escape, she dies soon afterward from her injuries, leaving Sheena to carry on the tribe’s legacy alone.
Otwani enlists Colonel Jorgensen, John Forgeham, and a small army of mercenaries, the Black Berets, to eradicate the Zambouli and clear the way for outside interests to mine the land. Vic allies with Sheena, and a new bond forms between them as they fight to stop the plot and defend Tigora’s homeland; a shared spark soon grows into an unexpected romance.
The climax unfolds on the African Serengeti. Zanda captures Sheena aboard a helicopter and attempts a deadly plunge down the Zambouli Falls. In a breathtaking turn, Sheena telepathically summons a flock of flamingos that converge on the helicopter, causing a fall that hurls Zanda to her death. With the militant threat still imminent, Sheena leads her people against the mercenaries and Otwani. In the fiercest moment, Sheena fires an arrow into Otwani’s heart, fulfilling the old prophecy, yet she herself is nearly struck by Otwani’s vehicle. Vic swoops in to crash the vehicle, saving Sheena but sustaining severe burns. He is healed, not by nature alone but by the healing earth, and he faces a hard choice: remain with Sheena or reveal the truth to the outside world, a revelation that could imperil her home to corporate interests.
Before leaving for New York, Vic and Sheena share an intimate, off-screen moment, after which Sheena records a farewell message on Vic’s tape recorder. The film closes with Sheena riding Marika the zebra across the Serengeti, a symbol of her deep bond with the land and its wild inhabitants, a guardian who must balance love, prophecy, and the fragile future of her world.
