The treaty was signed 150 years ago between a landlord and the Livingston company. It grants the company the right to transform the forest into an industrial area or plantation for 150 years. If the company fails to fulfill its terms, the forest reverts to the Indian government; if successful, the validity can be extended for another 350 years.

After learning that rare earth minerals are rumored to lie beneath the trees in 7000 Kandi, the Livingston company becomes determined to clear the forest. The minerals represent a valuable resource that motivates the company to intensify their exploitation efforts despite the environmental and cultural costs.
