Shallow Grave

David, Juliet, and Alex conduct a string of calculatedly cruel interviews to choose a new flatmate, treating applicants as toys for their amusement. The mockery exposes their manipulative dynamics and boredom with normal life. At the end, a mysterious Hugo is offered the room.

Shortly after moving in, Hugo dies from an apparent drug overdose in his room, shocking the three friends. They discover a large suitcase full of money among his belongings and decide to keep both the cash and Hugo's fate a secret. The discovery marks the start of their moral downward spiral.

The trio removes identifying features from Hugo's body before burying the remains in the woods, hoping to erase who he was. They want to make the death vanish from the flat's memory and their own consciences. This is the first step in their plan to hide the crime.

David is chosen by lot to dismember Hugo's body, a task that unsettles him as the others watch in tense silence. Juliet disposes of the removed parts in the hospital incinerator, making the plan to keep the murder hidden feel more clinical. The group becomes more estranged as the crime compounds.

Unknown to the trio, Hugo is being hunted by a pair of violent criminals who torture informants as they track his trail. The flat below theirs is broken into, heightening anxiety and fear in the residents above. The sense of danger begins to eclipse their petty conflicts.

Juliet and Alex seize the money for a shopping spree, while David's paranoia grows and he relocates the cash to the attic. He starts living there, drilling holes in the attic floor to spy on the living space below, and the bond between the three fractures.

The criminals break into the flat and beat Alex and Juliet until Alex finally reveals where the money is hidden. The demand for cash accelerates the collapse of trust among the friends.

In the dark attic, David kills both intruders with a hammer and then carries the bodies back toward the woods to dispose of them. The act reinforces his isolation and fear of being caught.

The police investigate the prior intrusion and are surprised when the three of them deny ever having a fourth flatmate. The deception deepens their entanglement in the crime.

The bodies are discovered in the woods, and Alex is sent by his editor to cover the breaking story. With the net of suspicion closing in, Juliet begins to consider a way out.

Juliet seduces David into surrendering the cash so she can buy plane tickets to Rio and escape, intending to flee alone while leaving Alex to deal with the aftermath. The betrayal simmers beneath their fragile alliance.

Alex returns, sensing Juliet and David's collusion and trying to call the police. A violent confrontation erupts: David punches Juliet, Alex is stabbed in the shoulder, and Juliet fatally kills David to silence both men.

Juliet tries to escape with the money to the airport, but the suitcase is revealed to be filled with newspaper clippings about the shallow graves rather than cash. She breaks down and boards a Rio-bound plane with nothing but a plane ticket.

Police arrive to find Alex pinned to the floor in a pool of blood, and the cash is hidden under the floorboards. David's ominous final monologue completes the film as his body is slid into the morgue.
