In 1991, Maksymilian 'Max' Paradys and Albert Starski volunteer for the first human hibernation experiment led by Professor Wiktor Kuppelweiser. The plan is to awaken three years later, in 1994, but the outcome sets the course for the entire story.

In 2044, Max and Albert awaken from cryogenic sleep and find themselves in a post-nuclear world cared for by women. They are surprised to be in what seems like a clinic, and Max is instantly drawn to a woman named Lamia Reno.

They discover that Professor Kuppelweiser doesn't exist and that a long-ago war left males extinct. The women explain they reproduce through parthenogenesis, and the two men are under constant surveillance. Lamia's stance grows more complicated as she senses Max's attraction.

During a briefing, Max kisses Lamia, triggering a threat of euthanasia and a display of the regime's control. The kiss nonetheless rekindles Lamia's drug-suppressed passions, complicating their dynamic.

Lamia visits the oldest living woman, Julia Novack, who argues that restoring the old world with two sexes is the rightful course. The idea adds moral tension about balancing power and biology.

The pair are allowed to go out on a field trip and encounter a two-apple sacred tree. They eat the apples, deciding to abandon synthetic food for a glimpse of the outside. This moment marks the shift toward potential rebellion.

In a council with the supreme ruler of women, Her Excellency, Max and Albert question what happened to mankind. The women explain that a failed weapon, not their fault, caused male extinction, and dismiss the old order. The sacred apple tree metaphor deepens the ideological divide.

Max and Albert sabotage the power grid to escape but are captured again. The assembly votes to force their 'naturalization' as women, a decision they contest. They manage a second break for freedom.

The men encounter an anarchic group of women opposed to the regime, and chaos ensues as they try to flee. Lamia reappears, guiding them to a periscope that reveals the surface and the ruined world above. In truth, Lamia's aid is a ruse to capture them for surgery.

Lamia sabotages the planned naturalization surgery and helps Max and Albert escape with protective suits. They reach the surface via a capsule activated by a password, discovering a barren landscape and a living, surreal coastline. A first contact with Emma Dax and the others unfolds as they process this new reality.

In the ruler's residence, the true identity of Her Excellency is revealed: a male in disguise who has led the League of Women. He explains the regime's manipulation of radiation and desire to keep control. Max, Lamia, and Emma strike a deal to stay, hoping to reshape the future from within.

Disguised as laboratory workers, Max and Albert contribute male gametes to incubators, signaling a tentative reintroduction of male genes. A nurse discovers a newborn with a penis, confirming that male offspring can exist in this world.
