Seven Sundays (2017) – Full Plot Summary & Ending Explained

Read the complete plot breakdown of Seven Sundays (2017), including all key story events, major twists, and the ending explained in detail. Discover what really happened—and what it all means.

The Bonifacio family opens with a tender ritual: letters tucked into a Rebisco biscuit can for their father, Manuel Bonifacio Ronaldo Valdez. The montage gently traces the family’s history through photographs, from brighter days to quieter moments, painting a portrait of a man who shaped a lineage that would later be tested by distance, pride, and time.

In the present, Manuel is a widower living with his nephew Jun [Ketchup Eusebio], a quiet man who watches over him with care. On Manuel’s birthday, the town’s gratitude and his children’s greetings fill the air, yet the moment is shadowed by news from Dr. Nelson: Manuel has lung cancer and only two to five months to live. The weight of that prognosis settles over the family as they gather at the old family house, each carrying their own regrets and unresolved tensions.

Allan Bonifacio [Aga Muhlach], Bryan “Bry” Bonifacio [Dingdong Dantes], Charmaine “Cha” Bonifacio [Cristine Reyes], and Dex Bonifacio [Enrique Gil] return to the ancestral home with a practical yet fragile agreement: Manuel will decide how his last will should be handled. They commit to seven Sundays together at the house, a quiet promise to face the past and their father’s mortality together, even as their lives outside the house pull them in different directions. Allan wrestles with a rival businessman, Mr. Kim, Bry pursues a woman named Juliana Smith, Cha negotiates with the fallout of her husband Jerry’s infidelity, and Dex lives on the run after a botched concert incident.

Dex arrives first at the old place, told by his roommates to disappear for a while as danger closes in around him. He soon reconnects with Camille Charlie Dizon, his old friend, at Allan’s store, where the siblings’ financial worries come into sharper focus just as Dex’s own trouble shadows him. The family’s plan for a belated birthday celebration for Manuel falters at first, as Jun tries to stall their father’s attention so everyone can buy time to smooth over old wounds.

A birthday party becomes a test of patience and unity, and a basketball game arranged by Marc tests patience further. The game erupts into a dispute between Allan and Bry, pulling Cha and Dex into the fray and leaving Manuel to step in with a sharp, almost protective seriousness. In that moment, Manuel’s disappointment lands squarely on Jun, who urges his cousins to put aside pride and pretend if necessary to keep the family together.

The siblings attempt a fragile truce, but the topic of funeral arrangements hangs in the air like a question none of them can fully answer. Manuel proposes an advanced eulogy—a plan that forces an awkward pause and, for a moment, forces them to confront what they owe to him and to one another. The family agrees to proceed, even as the underlying currents of tension remain.

During a candid evening at the house, the topic of Manuel’s health surfaces once more: Dex, Cha, and Bry share memories of their past selves, while Manuel receives a call that he may have been misdiagnosed; the doctor reveals that the issue could be tuberculosis, not cancer. He doesn’t disclose this to his children yet, fearing they might abandon him again if the truth comes to light.

The following Sunday brings a beach day, where Manuel displays unusual vigor that unsettles his children. He introduces a game drawn from the Rebisco can—pulling out a letter and asking the siblings to guess who wrote it. The exercise becomes a poignant reminder of how distant they have grown and how much they’ve left unsaid between them.

Dex stays close to his father, sharing ice cream at Allan’s store. He confronts Mr. Kim in the open, and the tension around Allan’s finances intensifies. Dex’s life remains precarious as he asks Camille to mislead others about his whereabouts, while his eyes catch sight of Jerry flirting with a college student, sparking a violent outburst in Dex. Manuel calls Bry to help Allan, offering a shared purpose beyond their individual concerns.

Bry’s arrival brings a new clarity: he supports Allan financially and, in turn, learns more about Juliana and Gian, Allan’s child. The next day brings a sobering moment when Bechay, Allan’s partner, undergoes a medical check-up. Dr. Nelson delivers the truth to Allan and Bechay about Manuel’s health, forcing Allan to confront the man whom he’s spent years trying to measure against his own standards.

A quiet dinner becomes a turning point as Dex’s confrontation with Cha about Jerry leaks into a broader family reckoning. Manuel’s conversation with Jun about his true condition is overheard, and Bry receives news about Dex’s alleged misdeeds. The siblings’ resentments flare into a harsh morning after, with hurtful words spoken aloud and old grievances resurfacing.

In the wake of the conflict, Cha evicts her husband, Allan returns to his store, Dex retreats to his old room, and Bry receives a hopeful message from Juliana about Gian. Allan’s reflection on his unfinished house gives way to an emotional moment with his son, who helps him realize what he owes to his family. The family members begin to come together again, seeking to repair bonds and reach for a kinder future.

They visit the cemetery where their late mother is buried, and Manuel is seen speaking softly to her grave, a stark reminder of how he has carried the role of father even when he felt like a failure. The siblings, moved by the memory of their mother and the present reality of Manuel’s struggle, offer a unified, living tribute—an improvised eulogy for a father who is still there, still capable of love, and still part of their lives.

In the end, Allan’s store is relaunched amid a rivaling pair of siblings from Mr. Kim’s side. A lighthearted street-dance showdown follows the tension, challenging both families to celebrate together, and the Kim brothers’ defeat becomes a playful symbol of reconciliation and renewed family unity. The film closes on a note of resilience: even as time tightens its grip, the Bonifacio family finds a way to come together, to support one another, and to honor the memory of the ones they’ve lost while embracing the chance to keep growing together.
