Read the complete plot breakdown of Seven Golden Men (1965), including all key story events, major twists, and the ending explained in detail. Discover what really happened—and what it all means.

An international, high-stakes team of elite thieves assembles around Albert, Philippe Leroy the Professor, whose cool precision anchors the operation. Across from him stands Giorgia, Rossana Podestà, a seductive insider who plays the crucial decoy and feeds Albert information from within the Swiss National Bank of Geneva. Their target is nothing less than a vast hoard of gold bullions housed in a fortress-like vault, guarded by a web of security that seems almost impregnable. Albert directs the orchestration from a quiet hotel room, while Giorgia orchestrates the inside track: hidden cameras, a hidden homing device tucked beneath the vault, and whispered tips gleaned from the bank manager, José Suárez.

To pull off the heist, six men back Albert’s plan, sneaking into the bank under false pretenses. Adolf, Gastone Moschin; August, Giampiero Albertini; Aldo, Gabriele Tinti; Anthony, Dario De Grassi; Alfonso, Manuel Zarzo; and Alfred, Maurice Poli disguise themselves as sanitation workers and descend through the sewers, armed with a truckload of gadgets. Their plan aims to drill into the vault from beneath the bullion stack itself, leaving the outer layer intact to mask the theft, and they succeed in lifting six tons of gold with a level of finesse that seems almost TOO perfect.

Yet even a flawless plan meets friction. A radio ham, Alberto Bonucci, breaks into their transmissions, drawing police attention. Interpol loiters on their trail, only to dismiss the case after a cursory check in the vault. Giorgia, meanwhile, wanders the hotel suite with just enough audacity to threaten discovery, but her charm buys them time and keeps the pursuit at bay. In the end, the team slips away relatively unscathed. They split into two groups: Albert and Giorgia ride the train, while the others drive across the border by car. But the victory feeling is short-lived—Albert’s insistence on keeping the entire haul for himself leads to a reckoning. His six comrades are detained for forged passports, and Giorgia, who has begun an affair with the bank manager, betrays him and plots to steal all the gold for their own.

However, the plot twists again. Giorgia and her new lover discover the cargo has already moved faster than anticipated and has been melted down, leaving them empty-handed and the bank manager disappointed enough to abandon Giorgia. In a bold turn, Albert had actually diverted the gold cargo to Rome, where he reunites with Giorgia. Yet their former allies, released from custody, close in on the couple, tracing them to the warehouse where Albert hid the truck of bullion. The chase erupts in front of the Colosseum, and the six former partners converge to intercept the transport. A misstep—August accidentally disengages the handbrakes—sends the truck careening into the open, dumping the bullion before a growing crowd of eager onlookers. The heist is exposed, and the Golden Men are forced to retreat, already scheming a new plan to strike the Commercial Bank of Italy.

  • The film folds drama, wit, and high-stakes danger into a globe-spanning caper that plays out with stylish finesse, showing how trust, betrayal, and a relentless hunger for gold collide in a game where one misstep can ruin everything, and where a crowd’s greed becomes an unpredictable witness to a plan that was meant to be flawless.
